Things for grandpa to do with grandkid in SF

This weekend we are going to SF to celebrate our anniversary but are taking J along because we just moved Sunday and he's already a little out of sorts and clingy so we don't want to leave him all weekend.  As luck would have it my dad is working in SF this and next week and will be free on the weekend.  DH and I are going to head out for a kid-free dinner in the early evening while my dad watches J but I was hoping for some ideas for something for them to do.  It would be nice if they could walk there but driving would be fine.  I'm not too familiar with neighborhoods but the hotel we are staying at says it's in Nob Hill.  Something where J could be contained and active would be best, my dad lives in SoCal and he hasn't watched J by himself before because my mom is usually around.  Oh, and somewhere they could eat without having to wait nearby would be great.

TIA!

  • The exploritorium in the Marina area is pretty awesome. Easy to walk to lots of restaurants, and they can go down to the beach. Its about 3 miles from Nob Hill... but SF is hilly, Marina is at the bottom so might not be wise to walk.

As is Cal Academy of Sciences, which is in the park, just don't know about places to eat. probably further from Nob Hill

  • That sounds like so much fun and a great idea to make it work for all of you.

Will the date be in the evening?  If so, many kid friendly attractions (Cal Academy, Exploritorium) might be closed.  If it were me, I'd plan a ride on a cable car to a kid friendly resturaunt.  :)  The cable cars go through Nob Hill and they could make a whole evening of it (ride it to dinner and then back).  THe only issue is that they rides aren't cheap, but with one adult and one kid it shouldn't be TOO bad.

  • There's a fantastic park at the top of Nob Hill called Huntington Park.  You can read online reviews about it here:

I don't really have any restaurant recs for that area.  I used to live in the Marina and there are a lot of kid friendly restaurants there but, depending on where in Nob Hill you are staying, it might be too far to walk.  If your dad doesn't mind jumping in a cab with J I would have them head over there.

We would regularly take S to Squat and Gobble:

Also, there is a liquor store on the corner of Fillmore and Union that sells fantastic soft serve frozen yogurt.  I hope you have a great weekend!!!
