South Jersey Babies

XP: Cherry Hill Q's

I posted this on the Philly board but I didn't realize there was a South Jersey board, so I am double posting:

Hi ladies, I am from the Atlanta board but starting to do some homework for a potential move to Cherry Hill or surrounding areas.   My great aunt and uncle live in Cherry Hill/ Haddonfield, but they are in their late 80's and don't exactly have their finger on the pulse of young family needs.

Would you be able to give me any insights on what areas have the best schools, parks, etc?  What areas to avoid?  Thank you so much in advance!

Re: XP: Cherry Hill Q's

  • Hi--i guess it all depends what your style in.  DH and i are both teachers in nj, and unfortunately with the state of affairs right now with education, the scene is drastically changing.  we used to live in an area with a great K-8 school-then christie made all the cuts, and our school was run into the ground, and doesn't exist.  we merged with another bigger district and lost all of the benefits for moving to our area.  so i guess what i'm trying to say is for schools, right now it's all up in the air.  are you looking for a particular grade?  i know high school wise, cherry hill east still has a good reputation.  just know that you will pay to live in the nicer areas--mostly you can tell by the houses and their upkeep if its a nice area or not.

if you find a good realtor they should be able to help you out too and point you in the right direction--i've lived in every part of nj my whole life and would be more than happy to help you out.  but to name every area to avoid is difficult ;-) welcome to nj!!

  • The other poster made some good points about things changing in NJ thanks to our Gov Christie.  I'm a teacher in a great K - 8 district-Marlton, which is right outside of Cherry Hill.  Aside from CH & Haddonfield, your best choices would be Marlton (Cherokee High school), Mt. Laurel (Lenape HS), Medford/Medford Lakes (Seneca HS) & Voorhees (Eastern HS).

I love where we currently live, and elem school would be fine, but the high school option is less than ideal.  The areas I mentioned above are those we will be looking to move into before our babies begin school.

    Best of luck to you!

  • I forgot Moorestown!  Expensive though...

Another teacher chiming in here....  I agree with all of the above.  The areas mentioned are great places to live.  I'm not sure how long good schools will maintain their good reputations.  With constant budget cuts and battles, things will drastically change.  It will take a while to undo the damage that is already beginning.  However, the districts named have supportive parents and PTAs so hopefully they will keep doing what they can to keep schools afloat.  I do love South Jersey - close to the cities, mountains, and the shore. We are near excellent hospitals.  Shopping is everywhere and convenient. But taxes are very high.  And there's no end in sight.  Even if the governor uses his "tool kit" we will pay somewhere, somehow.

To all the teacher mom's to be - have a great end of the school year!  Good luck!!

  • you too!  i am non-renewed for next year, and due in october, so i am debating if i should even try to apply for another teaching position....so it's a nice calm end of the year here!

but enjoy and good luck everyone!

  • Well my son isn't old enough for me to speak about schools, but we moved to Mount Laurel recently and so far I like it!  It is kind of expensive, but worth it.  His daycare/early learning center is in Hainesport and it's amazing.  Good parks around, too.

  • I live in Voorhees and I looked at all the areas mentioned. I'm sure this applies to the other areas as well, but here are characteristics I like about Voorhees: I live within 3 miles of 2 large parks, at least 3 small children's park, and 2 walking trails; I commute to PA for work and the train to Philadelphia runs often and is inexpensive; the schools are good; overall the taxes are high, but there is a wide range of home prices. Hopefully I will not need it, but there are many medical professionals within 10 minutes of my house.
  • Does anyone know any good pre-school's?  Our little one will be attending next year.  We are still searching for a home to Rent, so I'm trying to research and get to know towns too.  And also find a great pre-school.  Any help is greatly appreciated! :)  Andrea
