Success after IF

Is this normal?

I am going to call the pedi tomorrow but wanted to ask you ladies too. Brady has been eating three meals a day and his formula intake has cut back significantly. I'm a little concerned. I think he only drank around 20-24 ounces today. Is this normal?

Re: Is this normal?

  • I would think this is normal.  Once they start getting calories from other sources than the bottle they don't require as much formula.

  • I'm not sure sweetie, but I just had to tell you that Brady is ADORABLE!!

  • I think I read in one of my baby books that at some point there is a shift  - babies start to get more of their needed calories`from solids and therefore need less from formula.

I'll try and look it up and let you know if no one else has any input.

  • IMO 6 months is a little early for 3 meals a day.  Not until after their first birthday do they rely on Food only for nutrition.  For now they still need BM or formula.  I would try cutting back on the food.  Since he may be used to the 3 meals a day I don't think I would completly eliminate it.... but maybe just reduce the amount you are giving at each meal.

Also - are you giving the bottle first or the meal first?  Try giving the bottle first and the meal second.  Or seperatly - for example bottle 1 hour before meal. Even though it was not that long ago it feels like forever and I can't remember what DS's eating schedule was like at 6 months - but I do remember that he was not getting 3 meals a day.  Maybe 2... and we started solids at 4 months, so it's not like we started late or something (not that 6 months is late).

    Good luck!

ETA: Also - I can't even remember how many oz a day he was getting at 6 months... maybe 30oz of BM a day - so actually, I don't think I was far from you now that I think about it -- maybe I'm no help... LOL  I do know that he was not getting 3 meals a day until maybe 9 months old.

We always give him the bottle first. When I say he gets three meals a day it's not a lot of food. He only eats about two jars a day.

  • At H&A's peak formula intake, we were only looking at 30ozes.

How we are around 20oz per day - has been this way ever since they went to 3 meals.

2 jars a day is not a lot at all.. LOL... sorry, disregard my advice.  Talk to your pedi but I think you are fine then.  It's not like you are overloading him on food and that is causing him to reduce his intake.  I did notice that during teething fits Tristan would drink less milk.  You can't really "force" him and it's not like he is down to 12oz a day.  I think you should be fine.

  • Is it possible he is teething? Both of our babies are teething right now and have decreased their formula intake.

I check everyday and don't see anything coming up.

  • At 6 months, our pedi wanted the girls on 3 meals a day because they were drinking up to 40 oz of formula even with 2 meals.  Once they actually started eating 3 meals a day (probably 2 jars a day each) they did drop in formula.  I think it's normal.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • That seems like more than enough formula.

My pedi quotes a recent study and 2 in the works that show at around that age lots of liquid calories = higher obesity rates, so you are on the right track.

  • i think its normal that once they are eating solids a few times a day they cut back their formula/bm intake. they may take the same amount of bottle feeds but they will eat less oz each feed.   a sample menu (from gerber) for a solids being a regular part of a babies diet:

    morning feeding= 4 oz ff or bm , breakfast= 4 tbsp rice cereal + 3/4 tub pears

mid morning snack= 4 oz ff or bm, lunch = 4 oz ff/bm = 1/2 tub sweet potaoes

    afternoon snack= 4 oz ff/bm = 3/4 tub peaches, dinner= 4 oz ff/bm + 3/4 tub green beans = 4 tbsp oatmeal, evening feed = 4 oz ff/bm

    thats 24 oz of ff/bm
