anyone buy meat half a cow?

some friends of ours are going to sell us half a cow in September. I was telling my grandma about it in hopes she would help me buy it and take half of our half. The cows live a good life on a farm free range they eat organic hay and grass no hormones or anything. Well the last month before slaughter they feed them corn I know its not natural for a cow to eat and it just fattens them up but my grandma is flipping out about it. Is it really that big of a deal that eats corn for a month? I honestly didnt think anything of it. Should I reconsider?

Re: anyone buy meat half a cow?

  • Corn is actually more of an animal-food than a people-food. Our bodies just aren't set up to digest it.

I wouldn't be bothered by it, but my ILs raise beef cattle and they raise the corn to feed them. I know other people might not be as ok with it as I am.

They finish the cow on corn so that it tastes more like traditional beef. This may or may not be a problem depending on why you want to buy a side of beef. If you're buying it because you're opposed to industrial farming practices or just want to save some money, then it's no problem.

  • I am in your same boat kind of. My uncle and I went half on a calf (lmao I made a rhyme, keepin that one!) and it is kept at his house in a small field, he has had cows for the past 10-15 yrs but this is the first I got in on the action. Considering it's just two of us right now, I asked my grandmother to split my half as well.

As far as the corn I agree, that one month is no biggie unless you are completely against the industrial style. However even if that's the case, it doesnt sound like the cow will be eating corn only which is how the grocery store cow is, whats worse, they put a ton of $ into just transporting all that corn to the cows rather than letting them eat the grass ya know? I honestly don't see anything wrong with it, our cows are supplemented with corn like that too, it is not there main food though.

  • lol I cant believe I had meet instead of meat wow its been a long day
  • I don't ever finish my animals on corn cows do not have the ability to eat corn it's NOT a natural food for them it makes them sick (but they do gain more weight on it so money $ for the processor)  I finish mine with mostly grass and a very small amount of mixed grains (wheat barrly type) when I mean small it's about 1/20 a day what most producers use to finish an animal mine do not weight as much so there is less "meat" but the extra is often more fat and I don't want that in my meat anyway just a nice marbling.  If you really want to know corn is not for cows.  I finish 2-4 steers a year but do it very naturally can't do organic here as the land will not qualify (they spray weeds)

  • Separate from the PP's explanation that cows are not meant to eat corn, my biggest problem with corn products in general is that it is very hard to find non GMO corn anymore.  I've been trying really hard to buy only organic corn as of late.  I'd be willing to bet that they're not finishing the cows on organic corn.
