NST?

I had a dr's appt today (reg appt plus follow up U/S due to spotting a couple weeks ago) and because I had a little bit more spotting this morning my doctor wants me to have a NST (non stress test) every week from now until I deliver. I guess it's only just 20 mins but just wondering if anyone else has to have them too? :)

Re: NST?

  • I've had them for the babies, they just monitor to see the babies heartrate for 20 minutes and see if I am having contractions. I go in weekly for them as well.

  • I have them every day...  I was having them every other day, and now it's every day.  I've had about 20 in the past month, so any questions, please ask away!

They want to see the baby's heartrate increase 10 beats for 10 seconds when the baby moves.  When you hit 32 weeks, they want to see it increase 15 beats by 15 seconds.

Often times, one of my babies will pass and the other will not.  When they're "non-reactive," I have to have biophysical profiles (BPP), which they're measuring 4 things (amniotic fluid level, movement, heartrate, and doppler study).

    Good Luck!!

  • Thanks so much everyone! Our baby is super active and all appointments have shown him growing like normal, heart rate has always been great etc etc my doctor is only having me do this because of spotting, but hey, I don't mind a weekly check on baby just to be extra cautious!!

  • I had to have them done frequently with my last pregnancy since I was overdue. They aren't really a big deal. You just sit in a really comfy chair while they monitor your baby's heartrate and movement.

  • I had them every week with my daughter b/c I was measuring small and so was she.  It was no biggie & gave me piece of mind that all was well.

  • I had them twice a week with dd, and I am going to have the same starting at 32 weeks. I always took a snack and water because I worked nights and she was always sleeping during them so I took those to get her moving, cause they use this vibrating "wand" to wake the baby up sometimes. It doesn't hurt, but it kinda tickles. I had to get a u/s if the baby wasn't moving much. And, a few times I had to go to the hosp because her heart rate would dip a little too low, and they wanted me monitored.

I've only ever had one--with DS, when I was 30-something weeks. During one of my regular appts, when the dr. was listening to his h/b, it suddenly dropped into the 90s (from the 170s). No biggie, it was an excuse to sit for 20 min :)
