Eco-Friendly Family

Some people have no sense of scale...

So I was just reading in the LA Times that Heidi Klum and Seal are selling their Beverly Hills house because it's just gotten too small for their family.  HUH?

It's 9 bathrooms, 6 1/2 bedrooms and like 9000 sf.

And what is a half bedroom, pray tell?

Re: Some people have no sense of scale...

  • Whoa.

And a half bath is the "powder room" where you have the vanity and a toilet.  Most common in two story houses so that it's on the ground floor for guests.

  • I bet a "half bedroom" would be the size of my master bedroom.  ;)

  • No idea what a half bedroom is. I'd kill for 1.5 baths though.

So would I! I do have a toilet in the unfinished half of my basement next to the laundry sink that is awesome for spraying diapers out though.

Don't you think a lot of people these days have much bigger homes than in the past and the expectation that everyone wants to live like that?

We have a 3 bedroom, 1 bath rambler with a small yard. The house has a great floor plan with an main floor family room and huge finished playroom in the basement. It's 1500 finished sq feet on the main level and the basement adds another 500. I used to work in a ritzy suburb (SAHM now) and my coworkers were always shocked when I said I loved my house. Sure another bathroom would be awesome but we are a family of 3 and hoping to be a family of 4. We don't need that much more space.

We get the same type of comments/reactions. We bought our house and I have no intention of leaving. Everyone assumes this is our starter home since we only paid $120,000 for it. It's in a great neighborhood (modest, young, mostly EF families - it's awesome), the entire school district is darn good so we don't worry much about that, it's just the right size for us. It has tons and tons of character. The yard isn't perfect but we have enough yard to have a lot of fun so we don't mind. No garage. People just don't see how we can buy a house and plan to live here for the long haul. I personally don't understand the "starter house" fad, but I hate moving and don't want to have any part of that unless we absolutely have to.

I'd be interested to see what that half bedroom is too. 9,000 too small for their family? Does that mean they actually have to (gasp) SEE EACH OTHER?  Oh dear gawd. We can't have that. Must have our own cave so we don't have to see anyone else...

I find it interesting that so many people don't know what a half-bath is. I don't mean that critical and judgey at all; instead, it just makes me realize that it's not as common of a term as I had thought.

It's a half BEDroom that the OP was talking about, not bath.

I looked it up and I think it was a misprint because other places are saying 6 bedroom and 11 bath.  lol

BUT, maybe they are right.  Maybe a 1/2 bedroom is a room with no closet??  That would make sense.  :)

ETA:  Another place said 6 bedrooms 9.5 baths.  Another said 6 bedrooms 10 baths.  I think they are all loony toons

Yeah I fail at reading comprehension, lol.

I bet it means no closet too.  I think technically if there is no closet most people don't consider it a real bedroom, you know?

    Like there's a difference between 9, 10 and 11 bathrooms, lol.

And I'm not sure about the weird half bedroom thing.  Wouldn't it just be an office or a den then?  We have one like that, and the appraiser said it's technically a den.  I'm only 20 minutes from Beverly Hills, so things can't be that much weirder there.

Ooh, even a random toilet in the basement would be great! I can send DH down there if he's going to stink things up!
