WWYD - Feeding on Demand Suddenly

Up until today DS was BFing about every 3 hours.  Starting today he wants to eat every half hour and feeding him is the only way I can calm him down.  My pedi gave us notes on BFing and it says to not feed again until 2 hours have passed since the last feeding.  Is it bad to be feeding him so often because its like I'm using feeding to pacify him?  WWYD, feed on demand or try to make him wait it out longer so he stays more on a schedule of eating every 3 hours?

Re: WWYD - Feeding on Demand Suddenly

  • My pedi said to feed on demand right now...gets the milk supply up...plus he could be going through a growth spurt and needs more.    My son does some cluster feedings during the day but  I don't mind it because he will usually sleep longer at night then. I was told the more you feed during the day, the more calories during the day and thus will sleep longer.  Just my two cents......

  • I don't really get why a doctor would tell you not to feed a hungry baby. That's how your baby grows and that's how your milk supply increases. Bad advice = low weight gain and low milk supply.

    Feed the crying baby.

  • He is probably going through a growth spurt. IMO you should feed on demand since you baby is still so young. They eat because they need it. If you don't feed him and make him wait, he is probably just going to become super fussy.

He is still way too little to be worried about a schedule, I wouldn't worry about that for a couple more months.

  • I had this problem around day 10 but then I realized she only wanted more milk after feeding off of my right breast; I then started to pump and noticed my right breast is only producing 1/3 the milk of my left breast.  Maybe you should try pumping to make sure there is not a flow problem.

  • I would call an lactation consultant. My LO was doing the same thing, and it turned out he was latching on but not actually drinking anything, just pacifying himself. So even though he was always feeding he was hungry.
  • bad advice.  feed the baby- they're still so young- maybe they're having an early 3 week growth spurt.

Thanks Ladies.  I have been feeding him on demand.  I plan on asking my pedi on Wednesday about their breastfeeding notes that said to wait every 2 hours.  I spoke with a lactation consultant last Friday and it appears that he was getting about 1.5 oz with each feeding so she didn't think I have flow issues.  I think I'll be calling her again to see if she can help with this new feeding schedule and make sure he is still getting enough milk like he was last week.

  • If you feed on demand and all the other cues are good (wet and dirty diapers, gaining weight), just follow his lead and give up on the schedule. Schedules are great... in a couple or four months.
