DS still hates carseat/car rides :(

It is starting to cause me major anxiety.  He has never liked riding in the car since the very beginning.  He usually screams bloody murder for about 20+ minutes until he tires himself out.  I thought it would get gradually better as he got older?  Some days I just feel so house-bound, but going out just stresses me out so much and I usually decide it's not worth whatever I was going out for and cut my trip short.  He arches his back as soon as I put him in his seat.  And he even does this when I put the carset in the stroller and baby jogger, so I can't even really exercise with him which is a double stressor for me.  We have toys hanging from the handle, sleep sheep for white noise, mirror in the car, etc.

I thought all babies loved riding in the car/stroller :(

Any tips or suggestions?

  • My baby is the same way in his car seat. Yesterday and today I rolled down the window by his car seat and he stayed quiet for most of the car ride! Maybe try that? I have a feeling this is a temporary fix, but it felt so nice to run a couple of errands sans screaming!

I will definitely try that, although it's been in the upper 90's here and I have been treasuring the car a/c....I will sweat it out if it works though :)

  • DD did this for awhile and it was awful! I felt the same...i didn't want to go in the car for anything! Somehow in the last week or so, she's fine in the car and I'm even just going out to do things cause she's so good! I hope it's not just a fluke. So, she gets a paci which is usually just in the car. Then, I line up a couple of soft animal toys by her mirror cause she likes to look at them. Burp wrag in her hand, plus another toy in her seat. I think the main thing I've found is that she CANNOT be too hot. I have to turn on the AC before I put her in, even if it's only 65 out. Her carseat is such a yucky material that doesn't breathe and it's so deep. I think we are about to switch to a convertible one already. Good luck! I hope you find the trick!

  • My DS was doing the same thing... I had my husband sit in the back w/ him one day to try and distract him and my husband said that it was really warm in the back and that my DS's cheeks were red and that he was sweating.  So, I BLASTED the AC (it was already on and I felt cool, but clearly the air wasn't reaching him!)  That's what I've been doing lately when he starts to fuss and it's worked every time.  I may be FREEZING most car rides, but at least he's nos screaming!  :)  Good luck - I know it's so anxiety provoking!

  • DD has started liking car rides more. She started getting more comfortable once we removed the infant insert, placed a large mirror in front of her (which she loves to stare at and watch the world go by) and blasted the AC.  I think her comfort in the sear itself and the temperature (she gets hot quickly) had a lot do do with her earlier misery.

  • Thanks for the feedback, I will try blasting the a/c and take out the infant insert.  He does get sweaty I have noticed, so maybe he's just physically uncomfortable because he's so hot.  If that is it, I am a really terrible mom! :)

We took out the insert a LONG time ago because DD HATED it.  Once we took that out things got a lot better.  There are still times when she doesn't like the car seat, but I can usually attribute that to something else (tired or hungry).

I've heard people say that sometimes babies do better in the convertible car seats.  If taking the infant insert out doesn't help it might be worth a shot to try one now rather than waiting until your DS is a year old.
