I almost clocked this doctor!

I took LO to the doctor today after a 10 day cold, fever this weekend and rash all over her torso.  Because it was a same day sick visit, we couldn't see her normal pedi so got this new guy.  He came in and looked at her rash and without even checking anything else said yep, it's roseola.  I asked for him to check out her ear anyway to make sure,  so he took this plastic swab to clear out some wax and ended up scraping her ear canal!  He pulled the thing out and it was all bloody.  He was like "I messed up so I may have to give you a prescription for drops so the scrape doesn't get infected".  Then he was too freaked out to keep poking around in there so a nurse came in and did this ear wash to clear out the rest of the wax.  LO was freaking out the whole time.  All to find out she has no ear infection and he thinks she was just pulling on her ear because of teething.  Since roseola is a virus we're back at home with no medicine and a fuming momma.  I feel like that doctor was a moron, but maybe I'm just overreacting.

    Gigi has super waxy ears to the point where I have to use drops to break up the wax.  Her pedi has to clean them out every once in a while in order to see past the was.  He uses a metal instrument.  One day he accidentally nicked the ear canal, and she bled a little.  To me it was no big deal.  I wasn't mad at him at all.  She has enough wax in there to make a candle if I don't use the drops every day. Stick out tongue

    Oh your normal pedi would be getting a call from me (or I would have waited till I saw him the same day - I would not have left) That would piss me off big time. I would have them pay for the visit and the meds....

    what kind of drops? If they are atibiotics I'd be hesitant to give them, I doubt ti will get infected.

    Try to trust your doc.  This isn't out of the norm in a way.  Also, for the future, know that about 85% of ear infections clear up all by themselves!

    I would be seriously pissed if my doctor made my LO's ear canal bleed.  That is really inexcusable. 

    As for roseola, just to give you a little hope - once the rash presents, that's like roseola's "white flag of surrender" (what my pedi called it when my DS had it).  So you are out of the woods and it'll only get better from here!

    While I don't excuse his bad bedside manner if he was rude and short with you, this is completely common.  He really needed to rule out an ear infection and since he could not see the ears, he had to attempt to clean the ears out, and the best way is with the plastic curette or irrigation (usually for older kids so they can hold still).  If your LO has a history of lots of ear wax and they cannot see the eardrums, you can put a few drops of mineral oil daily to dissolve the wax and soften it, so it won't be so difficult to remove next time.  Unfortunately, the canals are extremely sensitive and just a little scrape with the curette or if the wax is adhered to the canal and when it's removed, it may bleed. The antibiotic ears drops are usually given to prevent an outer ear infection. He was trying to help your child by ruling out an ear inection.  Roseola can produce a scary looking rash, but really there is nothing to do for it, but wait it out.  The rash may continue to get more pronounced when your LO gets hot or takes a bath for quite some time.  Sorry for your bad experience.  Let your regular pedi know next time you see them if the doc was rude or didn't explain things well.
