Finger foods at 8 months?

My son has just turned 8 months and I'm vey scared to start giving him finger foods. He has two bottom teeth and his two top coming in. My mother in law keeps giving him crackers, hot dogs, fruit, and other adult food. Several times he has choked yet she still keeps giving it to him. Is it ok for her to do so or do i need to put my foot down and just say no.

We started finger foods at about 8 months. I'm not sure I'd do hot dogs, but we did start with fruit (bananas, strawberries) and those puff things (they dissolve in their mouths).  Occasionally he wouldn't chew & would start to gag.  In fact, he still does that sometimes (now it's usually from shoving too much in at once).  This is why we don't leave his side when he's eating finger foods.

If your baby is really not getting the chewing thing, then maybe you should stop the finger foods. I don't really think babies need teeth to "chew" soft foods...they should be so soft they can gum them to mush.

  • My DS is 2.5 and I still don't give him hot dogs.  They're a huge choking hazard.  Most other finger food should be fine.

  • I'm not usually one to rush into a post to say "put your foot down!"

But, hotdogs are a huge choking hazard.  They're like the #1 choking hazard on the list.

Find some appropriate finger foods to suggest to MIL, and put your foot down.

  • I don't recall when we started giving DS finger foods, but I would definitely put my foot down with MIL. Just tell her your pediatrician has recommended the following foods first and give her a list of appropriate items. Agree with PP, they shouldn't require chewing. Crackers and hot dogs are definitely out. DS just had a hot dog for the first time and he's 2 - and we cut it into teeny weeny little bites.

It's hard to break the grandparent's hearts on food issues, but you could also remind her that too much too soon is a bad idea, especially with the prevalence of allergies, etc.

  • We started finger foods at 8 months as well.  We didn't do hot dogs till a year.  I agree with castle, soft bites of food are what eh should be getting.  pieces of banana, avocado, steamed veggies.  I would just tell your MIL, he needs to practice on these softer foods first and that you'll be introducing the other foods in a few months.  If she wants to give snacks like crackers, suggest teething biscuits, rice husks or zwieback toast.

I think it's hard for our parents sometimes, a lot of recommendations have changed and your memory is sort of faulty as to when things occurred.  Heck, I have to look things up and my children are less than 2 years apart - even more amazingly, multiple recommendations have changed in that time period.

  • At 8 months, the food should basically melt in his mouth...like the Gerber puffs everyone is mentioning.  The hot dogs are a big, fat NO!  I *just* gave my son his first hot dog (which of course he loved...) yesterday - cut into quarters.  I read once that hot dogs are basically perfectly engineered to kill toddlers, and I have never forgotten that.

    Is she your DCP?
