  • Usually between 6-7 years but it also depends on the breed of dog, what you're feeding, and pre-existing problems.

    I'm leaning towards not changing food at all, even when they are senior, but as I said, I don't know.

  • My understanding is that the major difference between adult and senior food is that senior food is more calorie dense. We just bought our 20 year old cat senior food (our vet knew this) for the first time a couple weeks ago because she's been getting skinnier and she did start putting weight back on so I'd say that part is definitely true. But obviously, she's done just fine on non senior food for the last 13 years.

  • Most senior formulas also have glucosomine which helps the joints. It is also fewer calories because older dogs tend to get less exercise. If you are feeding a natural formula you should be fine with adding a senior vitamin.
