Food Allergy

New study out...

that shows that Dr. may be lowering the criteria for a Eosinophilc Disorder diagnoses.  The standards right now are that 15 eosinophils per high power something or other need to be found in a biopsy for it to be considered an Eosinophilic Disorder.  Now they are considering lowering that to 5.  Just thought that it may interest some people on here because I know some kids levels weren't quite high enough for the diagnoses before.

Anyway, here is the article if you are interested.  https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/health/subscribe/ped-insights/06-11/eosinophilic.htm

Re: New study out...

  • Hey! We finally have a GI appt at the end of the month. I feel like the pedi and allergist think I am a bit nuts because I want to have a GI evaluate Asher. It seems like they don't think it is that big of a problem that he can't eat food! I think it is mainly because his height and weight are above where they should be, so they are like, ehhh its just food allergies. But it is not normal! We are going on 5 months of just apples, squash and carrots! Sometimes I do feel like I am crazy, but I need to make sure there are no undiagnosed tummy issues, other than a simple food allergy. We started Prevacid this week because all of a sudden his spitting up a few times a day. They want to see if it helps for when we attempt a new food again.

    Maybe I am crazy??!!

  • That is very interesting.  Katelyn had 6 and they said she was way below the threshold.  And she was tested at Cincinnati Childrens.  I need to go read that!

ETA: that article is a downer

  • It is a downer for sure.  DS has regulat allergies on top of EoE, so I didn't like the results they came up with on that one.  I just knew there were a few people on here whose children who had been tested for an EGID and their numbers weren't high enough for the diagnoses then.  Now they are considering lowering those standards so I thought it could be useful (although depressing for sure) information.

You are in no way crazy!  Most doctors do not know enough about EGID's to make a proper diagnoses or to get you to those that can.  I am so glad you are being so proactive for your lo.  Even if the tests end up being negative for it, you will have some peace of mind that way.  In my opinion, that is priceless.  Good luck and please keep me updated on what you find out!
