Update: TMI, My Gma, fine just scared S*less

Poor thing.  When in recovery from her colon cancer she had some complications.  Specifically a bowel obstruction.  It was incredibly painful and needless to say embarrassing for her and she spent a good amount of time in the hospital because an infection developed.

So her misguided habit now is to eat very little in an attempt to avoid an obstruction.  Like barely a tablespoon of food at a sitting.  She's obviously lost weight (20lbs in the last 6wks), and obviously isn't taking in enough to stimulate her bowels AT ALL.

She hadn't passed anything for 2 weeks when she finally decided it was time to see the Dr.  She's back on track and has been sternly advised to eat more at each sitting and throughout the day.  Hopefully she understands the science of it and behaves herself.

The admission to the hospital was misinformation.  My uncle called my Mom after dropping Gma at the ER and said she was admitted.  Well, she wasn't admitted, she was triaged into the ER.  Urg.

Just thankful that she's okay, that is isn't something more serious and for all the thoughts and well wishes.

No new update on DH's Gma.  Being transferred to a skilled nursing facility today, will have round the clock personal care for 48hrs, then will transition to in-house staff for the remainder of her stay.  She hasn't eaten or drank anything since last Wednesday, fights to take the meds that are making her comfortable, and isn't expected to last long in that condition.  The family has decided to not pester her with food or drink, but will honor any requests she may have to eat or drink (her plan is for ZERO medical intervention so IV is out of the question).  Just thankful she is being cared for by professionals and that the meds she is taking are easing her pain.

  • That sounds like a whole lot of stress all the way around.  I'm glad that your grandmother is doing better and especially eating more.  I'll keep your entire family in my thoughts.
  • I'm glad that she's okay, but that must have been really stressful. It's hard & frustrating when they're old and not making good decisions for themselves. Glad that she's in good hands.
