Success after IF

More non- chokey starter foods?

We've been going slow with table foods because Asha plays a lot with food in her mouth, gags and chokes. She is doing better with chunkier stage 3 purees, homemade mashed pintos and cheese and also eats bits of broken up cracker, puffs and yogurt melt broken in half. Small bits of scrambled egg is ok too.Her latest conquest was shredded cheese which she loves...any ideas of what to try next? Soft cooked cut up macaroni or canned peas? What else?

Re: More non- chokey starter foods?

  • The world is her oyster, so to speak.  Let her try whatever you are eating...she should be able to eat anything that is soft at this point.

We loved peas at that age...but I don't like them canned.  Why not do a fresh frozen bag of steamable peas?  They are just as soft, and don't have nearly as much sodium.

  • My new favorite things are the Dole fruit cups with 100% juice.  Because the fresh fruit available where we live is not that great at this time of year (except bananas - we ALWAYS have bananas in the house!), I was so happy to find these.

I usually drain off the juice (it's 100% white grape juice) and give her the little pieces of peaches, pears, oranges, or even pineapple and she loves them.  The pieces are small and they're slippery - so very "non-chokey."  There's no sugar added and no artificial sweeteners either, and they're very "busy mom-friendly" because I don't have to peel or cut anything!

  • Black beans (just rinsed from a can) were one of E's first favorites -- I used to slightly smush each one to make it easier for her to pick them up off her tray.

Pieces or strips of toast with fruit puree spread on them. Steamed peas, carrots, etc. Soft chunks of sweet potato and avocado. Cheerios.

After 20 months, 3 Clomid cycles and 4 IUI cycles, IVF #1 with ICSI = BFP!

  • I just steamed the crud out of any fruit or vegetable to make it super soft, then cut it up. Pasta is also good, too. I like the mini shells, because they are easier to grab but definitely not chokey. We also started pretty early with soft cut up meatballs that she could pick up but would easily crumble in her mouth.

  • DS used to choke and gag a lot when he first started eating finger foods, I think it was more about getting used to the solids than actual choking.  Favorites were canned carrots and green beans, they were easy to heat in the microwave and cut into small pieces.  If it's small enough to swallow then it's safe to give them.

I keep a bag of frozen organic mixed veggies from whole foods in the freezer and warm those up for him - it's frozen peas, carrots, corn and green beans. He likes all of those.

    Meatballs are a great idea.

We also break up the Annie's honey bunny grahams. They dissolve pretty quickly and are quite tasty.

Lots of fruit is available now - pieces of melon, cut up berries and cut up bananas are among will's favorites.

Also, you might want to (supervise and) let her gnaw on a cracker. It will probably turn to mush as she gums it and it's good learning. Will picked up a lot of his chewing/eating/not gagging skills doing that.

    Good luck!
