How long is LO eating?

Hi all,

So we're BFing and it's actually starting to go ok.  Lots of pain at first and then she wanted to eat FOREVER (seriously- sometimes up to 45 min at a time).  Now however, we've seemed to gradually get down to her eating around 10-15 minutes at a time before she passes out into a food coma and won't wake up.  Is that normal?  She's having the same amt of wet/dirty diapers and my breast feels softer after we're done.  I'm just worried that she's not getting enough since she's eating for so much less time than previous.

I should probably just be happy and not worry about it.  :-)

Re: How long is LO eating?

  • We are at 1 week now, and she started off nursing for about 30 minutes each time, and now she's around 10 min.  I assumed it was because my milk came in and she was filling up faster.  Seems normal though

  • I think that is normal. LO can do as little as 5 minutes during the night when my boobs are really full. I would say she averages 8-10 minutes now.

  • About 5-10 minutes depending on time of day.  Sometimes he takes 2 boobs and then its about 20 minutes.

i assumed the same thing.  now he eats anywhere between ten and forty five minutes.  i pay attention for his cues that he is hungry or full and feed him as often as he wants.  if your baby is gaining weight and still pooping, then im sure he is getting enough

  • I'd base it on number of wet and dirty diapers. As long as you're offering whenever she wants it, she's getting all she wants. It sounds like she's become more efficient at getting the milk out. Same thing happens here. Every now and then my LO will "backtrack" and spend a really long time nursing and nurse much more often for a day, but I think this is really him needing more milk because he's growing. The next day or so, my production is a little better and he goes back to 10-15 minutes.
