Painted wooden blocks...

I found a HUGE back of colored (painted) wooden blocks at a local thrift store.  They were $3 and are in great shape.  However, when I took them out to clean up I noticed there were some small chips of paint at the bottom of the bag.  I assume it chipped off from the blocks smashing together, but it made me a little concerned.

Should I worry that this paint may be dangerous (i.e. lead?)  I have no idea what brand they are or how old (although they don't look antique-esk).

Any thoughts?  DS is turning 1 so he still puts a lot in his mouth.  Maybe I should put them away for now, but I thought they were too good to pass up.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I got a big bag of wooden blocks, half painted and half natural colored. I'm putting the painted ones away until she's older because the natural ones are covered in teeth marks already!

  • Yeah, I'm thinking that it would just be safer to put them away even though they are probably fine..I'd rather not risk it!  I wish I could track down the brand to see whether they are non-toxic and approved toys, but I didn't really think about that until after I bought them.
  • You could always buy one of those lead test strips.  I've heard they're not 100% accurate, but what I remember is that they give false positives and not the other way around.  But it's really your comfort and I don't blame you for wanting to keep them away for now.  I think DS stopped constantly chewing by 18-20 months or so.  Now it's incredibly rare that something goes in his mouth.

  • Could you sand the paint off (sand down ? I don't know what it's called but I think you understand what I'm trying to say) and put natural oil on them? That's what I would do (or have DH do for me).
