Should I bother buying NB diapers?

So I have started buying a few packs of diapers (since I have been finding coupons and I figured why not!)  So far I have gotten a case and a package of 1's and a package or 2's.  I was wondering, should I even bother buying NB diapers?  I've heard different things from different people... just curious what you guys think.

  • I have huge babies so no I don't buy them. I do however love the umbilicl cord cut out, but I just roll the top of the diaper down.

  • I would buy a box. Add them to your BRU registry if you have one, then buy them for yourself. If you don't need them you can use the registry to return them since it would be past their normal return time frame.
  • It really does depend. You may want to get at least one pack of them in case. You'll probably get some at your shower, maybe even a diaper cake mad with them, and you'll get some at the hospital as well (though not as much).  Not with standing a 5-6lb baby, you probably won't need them too long.

  • I have a Bag of newborn and a box of 1's.

  • My LO was only 6 lbs when we brought her home, so we used like 2 packs. I just went and bought them after she came home. I would wait to see how big your LO before buying any, or would just buy 1 pack

My DD was born at 37 weeks and weighed 5lbs 10ozs. She wore preemie size for 3 weeks and NB size for 6 weeks after that! We definitely weren't planning on such a tiny baby. I would buy at least a bag. Who knows what size your LO will be and you can always return it.

  • You have no idea what size  your baby will be, that being said, I wouldn't buy more than 2 packages or so of newborns.  Get more 1's.  I had a good size baby though (8 pounds 5.5 ounces) so she was in 1's almost immediatley.

  • Definitely.  My DS was above average at 8 lbs, 8 oz at birth (and just over 8 lbs at discharge) and we went through an entire box (240?) of newborn diapers before moving up to 1s.  Keep in mind that 240 diapers will only last about 3 weeks with how often newborns need to be changed.
  • I'm hoping to mostly do cloth, but we will get at least a package or two of NB disposables because LO will probably be too small for the cloth OS dipes at the beginning (DH and I were both 7lbs at birth). Also since newborns need to be changed more frequently it makes sense to have a bunch on hand.

  • I plan on buying a few packs of nb diapers. My babies are usually around 7 lbs so they need them for a month or two.
  • DS was 8lb 9oz and we used the newborn diapers for the first week or so because they had the cutout for the umbilical cord, and then switched to cloth.

I would. We didnt have any before DS came and had to run out and get some after we left the hospital. You will know if you need to buy a couple packages once you leave the hospital for sure but tis nice to have them handy

  • DD was 7lb 9oz and wore NB diapers for 10 weeks...the weight ranges overlap, so I guess it depends on your baby's size/build.  DD was a skinny minnie and would leak out of 1's.
