Breastfeeding

letdown frustration, switch sides?

So DD possibility wasn't hungry when I put her to the breast twice now. Once after 2.5 hours and then again at 3.5 hours after her last feeding. She would suck until my letdown then dribble probably most of it out and then scream at me! I put her on the same side both times since she didn't get much out of it. Should I switch sides at this point even though I only had a letdown both times and nothing more? And what is the problem? I tried laying back to go against gravity, but that didn't seem to help and most of the time she does completely fine with my letdown.

Re: letdown frustration, switch sides?

  • Did you try putting her back on after she cried?  I mean, did you calm her down, wait five or ten minutes and then try again?  If so, did she refuse the breast then?

E has trouble with my letdown and when I feel it coming on (luckily I can feel it) I pull her off and spray off into a towel.  Once the flow slows, I put her back on and she eats happily.

I've tried calming her and putting her back on and she wasn't having it this time! My biggest problem, I think, might be that I can't feel my letdown!!!!!!! The only way I know its coming is by listening and watching Olivia and by that time, sometimes its too late!
  • I actually have the reverse problem with the letdown, I have an overactive supply that M can't keep up with.  She gets restless and starts screaming and throwing her body around when she can't keep up.  What I have found to work for us so far is when she starts doing that, I remove her from the breast, calm her down and then put her on the other breast, even if it's only been a couple of minutes on the first breast.  I'm not sure if the switch distracts her but she seems to settle down and we can get through that session.  Good luck
