NBR: prices at different HEB stores?

Anyone know if there's a difference in prices between different HEB's, excluding Central Market? Mainly between produce, frozen goods and dry goods (chips, cereals, canned foods), particularly the organic stuff is what I'm wondering about

I went to the one at Hancock today on the way back from work but the crazy HEB at Oltorf is closest to me and sometimes I would consider going to the Westlake marketplace if I'm coming back from visiting my brother's family.

We do a lot of Central Market shopping, especially for meats but I can't take their general grocery prices anymore!

Re: NBR: prices at different HEB stores?

  • I frequent 3 different HEBs and haven't noticed price differences. The products they carry are different, though. One has a great selection of organic produce, one has a really great selection of bulk/healthy living products, and one doesn't carry Annie's Cheddar Bunnies [which is incredibly annoying, b/c it's the one I shop at the most!]

  • I'm pretty sure that Central Market is more expensive for general grocery items.

I was thinking the same thing.

  • Oh yes, they can be different. I usually shop at Brodie HEB but work across the street from Westlake HEB. I found one product (butter, same brand same size) that was almost 50 cents more. I asked the manager and he said prices are "regional."

Wow, really interesting! All the HEBs I shop at are within 5-10 miles of each other, so I guess they're in the same region. That being said, I've never specifically compared prices on products, but I haven't noticed anything being unreasonably high.

  • Yes prices vary depending on the demographics of the HEB. Typically they fluctuate minimally (from a few cents to sometimes a dollar or so), but the prices are lower in lower income areas and are higher in the nicer parts of town. This isn't just HEB though, it goes the same for Targets/Wal-Marts as well.

gas stations are like this as well.

Yah, Brodie and Westlake are less than 10 miles apart, but definitely in different demographics.

This is what I've found at the various HEBs I've shopped (listed from most expensive to least):

    HEB @ Westlake (360/Bee Cave)
HEB @ 71 and Bee Cave
    HEB @ Escarpment/Slaughter (Circle C area)
    HEB @ Brodie/Wm. Cannon
    HEB @ the Y
    HEB @ Manchaca/Slaughter
    HEB @ S. Congress & Oltorf

It's not consistent for every product but a lot of similar products across the board can fluctuate as much at $.70 (or so much unscientific observation has gathered.)

Libby, I have heard that if you talk to the manager at your store, you can request certain foods that they don't carry. Some of the women at my WW meeting wanted a certain kind of yogurt at the Brodie HEB and sure enough, they now carry it.

To the OP, I also live closest to the Oltorf HEB, which I recently heard from a very reliable source (AKA GuavaGal) is nicknamed "The HEB of Broken Dreams". That about sums it up for me. I shop at the Brodie location now. I hate the Oltorf HEB. Every time I used to shop there, I would see or experience some kind of ridiculous incident. Purse taken out of my basket? Happened. Hookers in the parking lot? Seen 'em. Child assaulted in the parking lot? Saw it. Ugh.

Well that's disappointing.  I had a feeling that there were price differences but I wasn't specifically price comparing products.  I shop at the Westlake HEB and I do notice that it carries more organic foods than the other ones (I used to shop at the Jollyville one and also the Parmer and McNeil HEB).   The weirdest thing I noticed is that the floor is nicer!  Some of the other ones have cement floors but it looks like the Westlake one was lineoleum or something.

Hilarious. It's so true. Ever since I've become a sleep nazi, the thing that stands out the most for me these days is when I see people dragging their babies there at 10 o clock at night. I always think "Why isn't that child in bed??!!!"

  • That's because the WL one was a Randall's that went out of business and HEB bought the building. The floors were the same as the ones in Randalls.
