Trouble TTC

For PCOS'ers: Did you take a break to ttc?

For those of you that have PCOS, did any of you take a break of TTC after becoming diagnosed with PCOS? If so, how long?

I know that my case was a little different. I was diagnosed with PCOS before we started trying to conceive. We decided to wait it out a year in order to let the meds do their thing and let my periods come back. I am hoping by the winter time to start trying. I know that it might not necesarily make a difference but wanted to hear from others...

Re: For PCOS'ers: Did you take a break to ttc?

  • I was told 9+ years ago (right before I started BCP) that I likely had PCOS or endo, maybe both, because of my extremely long cycles/ missing periods.  It was the only symptom I had.  It's still possible that I have both, but last year, after TTC for 6 months and missing my period for over half that time, I had the ultrasound that showed the string of pearls.

Since we started TTC about 15 months ago or so, we have not taken any break that was not forced upon us.  I did the HSG, went on Metformin, then doubled the dose of Metformin, etc., and we kept on trying the whole time.  I've changed my diet numerous times in the last 10 months (low sugar, no dairy, whole-fat dairy, low-carb, blah blah) and we've kept trying.  We had a forced break due to formation of 3 cysts after Femara cycle 1 -- I was on BCP for 3 weeks.  Right now, we're sort of on a break, I guess, but only because I'm on CD 67 or something (I've honestly lost count, but I think that's right) after the 3rd failed Femara cycle and at this point, I'm pretty sure nothing natural is really going to happen (but it doesn't mean we've completely stopped trying).

I turned 30 during this process and, for me, I do NOT want to take a break unless we have to.  The RE has never recommended that we take a break either.  However, I think taking a break is 100% a personal decision, and I know that a lot of PCOSers are dealing with multiple symptoms that they're trying to get under control... so I understand where you're coming from.

Good luck to you... PCOS just completely sucks.

  • I was diagnosed with PCOS last July/August and immediately did 3 medicated cycles.  I didn't O during the first 2 and had a "weak" O during the 3rd.  I'm on a break currently to prepare mentally for injectibles but also to focus on weightloss and save money (my upcoming cycles will average $2500).

I've given the meds almost a year and nothing has changed.  I still don't have a natural cycle and I still don't ovulate.  I've also lost almost 20 lbs.  I can honestly say I'm no closer to being KU than a year ago.

After more than 2 years of fertility treatments, FET did the trick!
IVF March 2012 - BFP! - Severe OHSS = 8 days in the hospital in kidney failure
    No heartbeat at 10w6d
    FET August 27,2012 = BFP!

  • I didn't find out I had PCOS until I started infertility testing with my RE.  I am not taking a break before continuing our TTC journey.  I just don't see the need need to take a break, break or not, I am still going to have the same trouble TTC so why waste time.

::HUGS:: Good Luck to you too! PCOS does suck. I compeltely understand your reasoning for not wanting to take a break. I don't think I would either if I were in your shoes. Good luck!

  • Thank you all for your honesty! That sucks though. I was kind of hoping that may be I could even get off the Met before I start TTC. Wishful thinking on my part. That is not going to happen :/

  • No we didn't wait. I knew i had PCOS. We saw a RE as soon as we wanted to start TTC and started treatment immediately. Im super glad we didn't wait. The only thing that was regulating me was BCPs and obviously that wont get me pregnant lol. Best of luck to you!

  • Although I always suspected I would have a problem with TTC (long cycles when not on b/c), I didn't know that I had PCOS until last August. No- I have not taken a break at all. I am highly motivated to get KU, so I can get back on b/c and get back to normal. Also- that stupid biological clock won't quit ticking!

I feel like this journey is taking much longer than I anticipated- and I don't want to take a break. I want to keep going until I get KU, however long that takes!

  • Like you, I was diagnosed with PCOS before we were even trying.  I was diagnosed in November 2007 and was put on BC pill and metformin.  In July 2008 I came off of BC pill (stayed on metformin) just to "see" what would happen.  We were not expecting much and told ourselves that if we didn't conceive on our own, after a year we would go to RE to be more proactive (IVF, etc.).  On Cycle #3 of no BC pill I got my BFP.  I really attribute my success to the metformin.  Good Luck!
