Stupid laundry question (wma)

Elena has one of those canvas tote things with her name embroidered on the front. We use it as a daycare bag.  DH picked her up last week and emptied the bag, but apparently didn't look inside (or failed to tell me).  

There is quite a bit of spilled fruit juice (strawberries, watermelon, peaches) from a fruit salad I sent with her.  It is now dried in.

The thing says "do not machine wash.  spot clean and air dry."

How dumb would it be to machine wash?

The thing is smelly.

    Yuck? How expensive was it? If it can be replaced I would wash it on delicate and hope for the best. It doesn't sound like a happy ending if you don't.

    I would try and hand wash it in the sink then hang it to dry. If you can, keep from getting the embroidery wet as the colors might run.

    The bag is a natural canvas color with a deep purple bottom on the exterior (though natural on the inside) and it has deep purple straps. 

    Crap. Maybe I can just handwash/soak the bottom 2 inches or something.  I won't care if the inside turns purple.

    I had a work bag that got yogurt spilled all over inside it.  It had similar do not wash warnings, but in my opinion, the bag was ruined unless it was appropriately washed.  So, I chanced it, it's a little more worn looking, but still works - and does NOT smell like rotting milk!  Bonus! :)

    I believe you can return the bag to Lands End (at any time, for any reason) and get a new one.  Maybe try hand washing it and if it doesn't turn out, call customer service.
