BF and solids WWYD?

I normally nurse DD around 5 then around 630 then bed around 730 and nurse then, too. Well now I'm nursing the same times but feeding her solids at 7, today I did not get to nurse her at 630 like normal and she ate 4 oz of food. She couldn't get enough. So my question is, should I drop the 630 nursing, or just keep on with it? If I keep it up, at about what age should I stop that nursing session? Thanks :)

  • What does the rest of your schedule look like?  This is what we are doing right now and it seems to work well for us:

    6- nurse

    8- breakfast (2-4 oz solids)

    9:30 nurse

    12 lunch

    1 nurse

    4 nurse

    5:30 dinner

    7:30 nurse - bed

So basically nursing every 3ish hours and 3 meals a day staggered in between.

  • I'd go with her lead, personally.

L nurses when he wakes in the am, breakfast, nurses before morning nap, lunch, nurse before afternoon nap, nurse after afternoon nap (usually, not always), dinner, nurse before bed.   (HA!  I just realized it's pretty much just like danjou's, probably just different times!)

I also try to get him to nurse a few other random times during the day because we want him to gain a little more weight, but usually when I offer he will for a minute or two and then he's done.

Also, if we are busy doing stuff, he will only nurse about 3 times during the day.  He's just too busy to nurse, but he will eat a lot of solids.  He likes to eat, nurse, not so much.  :P

  • Our day goes like this; nurse 6 ish then breakfast at 8, nurse before nap, nurse for lunch, nurse before afternoon nap, nurse at 5, 630 and 730 wjth dinner at 7. She doesn't "need" the 630 nursing, I started that to cluster feed her because on the days I work she wouldn't drink from a bottle. Now she drinks 5 oz from a bottle. I've just kept up with it, just because. I'll see how she does. I don't want to drop it because I don't want my supply to drop even more.

This is our routine almost to a T.  I know you're supposed to nurse before feeding solids but it just never works out that way and I don't worry about it.  She's not a huge solids eater so I don't worry about her replacing nursing with solids.  I don't fret about much with eating actually as long as she's nursing.

yeah, if she is happy eating solids, and you feel comfortable dropping it, I would and see what happens.  If sleeping turns to crap or she seems hungry, etc, add it back in.  lol

For the first year, solids aren't really replacements for nursing.  Babies still get most of their nutrition (and fat) from your milk.  LLL recs that you always nurse first.  And I'd say you should continue your normal routine if you're protecting your supply.  Otherwise it'll regulate downward.
