What do you put on a rash (prob heat rash)?

DS has mild red rashes on the backs of his knees and in the crevices of his arm (other side of elbow)... but he also has a mild rash in the little bit of wrist chub.  The ones behind his knees and elbows look like a heat rash.  His wrist looks a little more like what I would picture excema to be (very dry patch of skin).

If its a heat rash, I wondered if his diaper rash ointment (Desitin).  I also have 1% clotrimozole cream that I used on a heat rash I had.

I tried a little Gold Bond lotion last night but it didn't seem to make any difference.

I figured after a couple of days I'd call the Pedi if nothing works.  WWYD?

  • I'm a pediatric dermatology PA - the areas that you are describing are CLASSIC for eczema. Use 1% hydrocortisone cream 2x day for about 2 weeks. You need to moisturize about 3x day...we recommend CeraVe or Cetaphil cream (not lotion - lotion contains alcohol). Clotrimazole is an antifungal and really won't work on eczema or heat rash. It may have made your rash better just because it's a cream, and cream helps heat rash.

If you think it's heat rash, try corn starch. It will keep those folds dry and prevent chafing. If that doesn't work, eczema is a possibility. Talk to your pedi about hydrocortisone because it's a steroid. California Baby makes an all natural calendula cream that has worked nicely for us.
