Constipated then diarrhea

My LO recently has developed a new pooping pattern.  She will only poop every 3rd day and when she does, she will go about 3-4 times that day.  I wasn't concerned until I got a call from daycare last friday saying that I had to come get her cause she had more than 3 diarrhea's and that was their policy.  Since with breastfed babies you can't tell the difference from a normal poop and diarrhea, they assume it's diarrhea.  I put a call into the pediatrician last week and they weren't concerned, said just to keep an eye out for signs of dehydration.  My biggest concern is that my DH or I can't keep leaving work everytime LO poops more than normal but at the same time, I don't want to blow it off if it is something to be concerned with.  Anyone dealing with this and have any suggestions or words of wisdom for me?

  • I've been told that this is normal for breastfed babies. They can go days and even over a week without a poop. Then when they do go it can be a lot. Your daycare should know that. Breastfed poop is always liquidy. My breastfed baby's poop has always been liquid and some days she goes more than others.

This. Excluding DS current poop situation (he got dehydrated and is now all messed up in that department) he would sometimes go 6 or 7 times in a day which was totally normal for him. It slowed down to every few days and then 2 or 3 full diapers in one day. The center should know how breastfed poop works. Could you find another center that's more has more breastfeeding awareness?

This seems crazy to me...yes, my LO's poop looks like diarrhea (to someone who wasn't familiar with BF baby poop) but that is absolutely normal. Can you ask your Dr's office to write them a letter or call them? I mean he/she may want to see your LO to discuss the poop situation but I'm sure your LO is fine. DD doesn't poop every day now but when she does it can be a few times and the first one is usually a doozy. Have you spoken to the head of the daycare?
