Natural Birth

Natural remedies - Group B Strep??

I tested positive with my first, and any worried i will with my second. I hated having to be hooked up to the IV during labour. My midwife mention that we would try some natural remedies to try to flush it out before I go into labour, but didnt give me details (I asked about it at a very early apt.)

Anyone know what these natural remedies are?

  • imagesecondaryPULSE:

I don't know how "natural" it is--but I tested GBS + and will be doing the Hibiclens vaginal washing during labor.

A little info on that here:

If i end up GBS + i will be doing the hibiclens scrub

  • Check out the probiotic supplement Femdophilus - specifically formulated for healthy vaginal bacteria. I tested GBS positive with my first PG when I was not using it, and was negative for my second and third PG's when I was using it...

    GL!

  • op just because you test positive the first time does not mean that you will be positive again.  if you are going to try more natural remedies i would def get tested again to see if it worked.

i've heard of plenty of women who try the hibiclens douche, but if the GBS is in your intestinal track it is not going to help.

IF you are positive again, maybe you could discuss with your mw about getting the bag of antibiotics and then stopping the iv?  they wouldn't take out the needle but maybe a hep lock?  that way you are more free to move around.

  • Here is a post on it and some alternative remedies for getting rid of it for good vs simply treating it for birth.

To eradicate the incidence of GBS, you can try this protocol, which I used on my midwife's recommendation:

    • Acidophilus - 4 billion cells per dose
    • Echinacea - 350mg capsules - two capsules
    • Garlic - 580mg capsules - two capsules orally (some women also find it useful to use garlic intra-vaginally to combat vaginal infections, including GBS ? peel one clove, wrap in cheese cloth, and insert vaginally for a minimum of 6 hours, overnight is ideal)
    • Vitamin C - 500mg with 200mg bioflavonoids
    • Grapefruit seed extract - 15 drops (under tongue or into a glass of water that you will drink within 10 minutes)
    • Hibiclens Vaginal Wash.. although this is not ?natural? it has far less side effects than antibiotics given in labor
    • Re-Test closer to due date - GBS is a transient bacteria and will come and go as the flora of the vagina changes (all of the above can change the flora enough to test neg. and avoid intervention during and after labor)
For more information on this regime, go here.
Midwifery Today has a great article on additional ideas here.
Another list of MW protocols is here.

  • Thanks for all the info ladies!!

I was told by my doctor, with my first pregnancy, that I would get the hep lock and wouldn't have to be tied down with the IV. Then, once admitted during labour, the nurses laughed at me and said they didn't do that (my prenatal clinic visits were IN the same hospital that I gave birth, but my doctor wasn't on duty when I was there. I was furious!) So I had to drag around that stupid pole while trying to pace and stay calm while not getting tangled in it all. It was horrible.

And I know that just b/c I had it the first time, doesn't mean I will test + this time, it has just been in the back of my mind since I found out I was pregnant again.
