Re-use crib mattress for new baby or buy new one?

I remember reading somewhere that you should always buy a new crib mattress for a new baby and not re-use old... I can't remember why though...

DS has FINALLY transitioned to his big boy room after 3 weeks of hell in his toddler convertible bed..... we took that out and put a queen bed in there and he sleeps like a champ.

So now we can use crib for new baby which works out perfectly. But I'm wondering if I need to buy a new mattress??? I don't mind spending the money at all if it's the safest option.... but then if it's not a big deal I don't want to get a new mattress when I have a perfectly good one.

Advice?

  • I have never heard of such a thing, but in our situation we bought a new one because Jacob was still in his crib.  If he would have been out of his crib, then we would have used his.

  • I would definitely re-use it.  Most of those mattresses have a warranty of at least 10 years -- that's good for all the kids you'd likely have!  We are using the mattress that my 2 nephews and niece used before and we love it.  It's a much better mattress than anything we found in the stores.

  • We will use the same when we have another.
  • I have never heard of not being able to reuse the mattress. We plan on reusing ours with any future LO's we have.
  • I've actually heard this and it was back when I had DS1 in England.  Something to do with SIDS.  I will probably get a new one since DS2 will be transitioning to a toddler bed soon and taking the mattress with him so to speak.  Reusing the mattress seems a like a NA thing.

Yes!!! Something about baby's CO2 getting trapped in mattress and bad for future babies to breathe in... I am going to look for the article. Thanks...

  • I would get a mattress wrap. I think that the off gassing of a new mattress is as bad if not worse than the CO2 in a used mattress.

  • Oh man, this is one item I actually thought I could re-use...almost everything of mine is outdated, since DS will be 5 in August.  Thanks for bringing this up.  I'll have to research it.
