Here's the deal. For the last 5 nights Jake has been up anywhere from 2-5 hours in the middle of the night. (Last night was the worst and was up from 12am-5am...he's asleep now.) Basically, he cries, calls for me or DH and as soon as we go in there, he stops crying. We gently tell him to lay back down and then the cycle starts over 15-20 minutes later. After 2 hours of this, on the first night, I let him CIO for 20 minutes until he fell asleep. (FWIW, I also held him for a while, rocked him and rubbed his back within that 2 hr time frame.) He IMMEDIATELY calms down once we're in there.
At first I thought it was just that he needed us in there for comfort since he was so sick the week before and was used to us being there for him in the middle of the night (when he'd wake up with fevers).
Then, I thought maybe it's his two year molars. I noticed him rubbing his ear sometimes when I'd go in there, but he never does it during the day while he's awake. I see no signs of them, but I know that doesn't really mean anything.
Then I thought ear infection (again, because of the rubbing) but I HIGHLY doubt that's what it is because this all started the night we finished a 10 day round of antibiotics for his infected chicken pox. I'd think that the antibiotics would've also kicked any ear infection within that time. I'm taking him into the pedi tomorrow morning just to be sure though.
Or could this just be a "phase?" He's never gone through anything like this before so it's all new to us.
I hate this because I don't know the cause, therefore I feel like I can't really help him. I HATE the thought of letting him CIO if he's in pain, yet I really don't know what to do when I go in there for hours on end and he starts crying minutes later.
Plus, I'm freaking exhausted.
Also, he's been acting COMPLETELY fine during the day- happy as a clam. And hasn't had a fever at all throughout this whole thing. I've also given him mortrin two nights and it doesn't seem to make a difference at all. Oh- and he WILL NOT sleep in our bed. Like, he seriously thinks it's playtime whenever he's in here with us. So, even if I wanted to, that's not an option either.
Any thoughts on what this can be? Is there an option I'm forgetting? If you got this far- Thank you! And if you respond- thank you even more!!!!

We are going through an 18 month sleep regression...and it sucks.
FWIW, I read that the 18 month sleep regression can happen anywhere between 18 and 22 months.
We are just trying to ride it out. It has been absolutely hellish.
I hope you get some sleep soon!!
I have no experience with ear infections so I really can't speak to that but it seems to me that if he stops crying when you come in (and motrin isn't stopping it) that it isn't pain. As long as I felt comfortable it wasn't about pain, I think I would let him CIO. With that said, you should probably take him to the pedi just to be sure.
Good luck!!
Penny's been doing this on and off lately. Tonight she was calling for Mommy...I went in and she said "want to see Daddy!"...So I went to get Tommy...and she said "want to see Mommy!" when he went in. I don't know what it is. Usually she stops crying immediately when I go in, so I NEVER pick her up...I just lean in and give her a cuddle and tuck her in.
It does suck though. I have relearned to love sleep!
