Looking for creative ideas

We've done a lot of travelling with DS and have pictures of him that I would like to display or put together somehow.  I'd like to do something a little more creative then a shutterfly photo book.  The pictures are stuff like him in front of the Alamo or the Grand Canyon.  My original idea was to do something with a map, but I'm not sure how to do it.  I'm pretty craft challenged.

Re: Looking for creative ideas

  • Dear Smacb,

When we buy our new place (23 days til closing!!) I plan on putting up two "lanes" of horizontal chairrail/moulding on each wall in each bedroom.

Before I install it, I will decide what size and orientation of pictures I want (4*6 or 5*7) and then print a tooooooooon of pictures cropped with the appropriate orientation -- portrait or landscape. The images will be placed within the two pieces of moulding, side by side. I will likely be buying Plexiglass strips to protect the pictures from toddler hands. Each room will be framed by pictures.

Of course, if you have already decorated a room, this may not work for you. But since we are going into a fresh house, it'll be great for us. Is this what you are looking for? Or something more for, say, the living room?

Also, I am stealing this (first image) from a DC nestie's Pinterest page. Could you do this in reverse? Use the map as the mat and put the pictures underneath?

You could get a huge framed map of the US (it sounds like a lot of the travelling is in the US?).  Cut out the state where the photo was taken (for small states like MA, maybe do a call out).  Size photo to best fit in the area of the state & paste in (replacing the cut-out state).  I think it would be cool as the states are replaced with photos of him in front of monuments/places of interest & would be a great keepsake.

  • DH had a Rand McNally "sticker passport" for the the US when he was a kid. It had a page per state, and a sticker that you put on the page when you'd been to that state. The sticker passport doesn't seem to be available anymore, but you could make a photo album with fifty pages labeled for the states and fill in a picture when he visits each state. It would be cute when he ends up with some pictures of himself at one and some at twenty if he keeps it up :). Now I'm wondering if we have pictures for the first time DS has visited all the states he's visited...
