Registry & Bottle Question

Hello - we are buying items off our registry tomorrow that we need prior to the baby's arrival. We plan to breastfeed & pump - how many bottles/nipples do we realistically need and at what size?  TIA!

Re: Registry & Bottle Question

  • Don't buy a ton of one kind, I have friends who's babies didn't like the bottles they bought and they were stuck with them... you could probably get away with 2-4 4oz bottles and just one nipple for each bottle to begin with and add the 6+ oz bottles to that later.  Some companies have starter packs that are great.  We used Dr. Brown with DS and never had a problem with them so the new baby better like them because we have tons!

We were "those" people who only registered and purchased Tomee Tipee.  Someone on a whim I guess bought us the Playtex Ventair and I tried it once and DS hated it.  So we stuck with only Tomee Tipee and haven't had a problem.

  • Yeah, it's tough to say - it's really better to wait until baby is here and then invest in bottles.  Personally, we registered for a few in different brands, experimented once DS was here, and then bought a few more of the kinds DS preferred.  We had Avent, Playtex Drop-Ins, and Dr. Brown's, and the only one we could use for months w/DS was Dr. Brown's b/c of his reflux.  We transitioned him over to Nuk once he got a little older and his reflux was better controlled, but that was only b/c we were sick of all the little pieces that the Dr. Brown's required.

I will say that I don't think it's worth it to invest in many - if any at all - of the smaller size b/c while you can put 3 oz in a bigger bottle, you can't put 6 oz in a smaller bottle.  I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I really dislike all the extra clutter of having a bunch of little bottles AND a bunch of big bottles - it didn't dawn on me until DS started requiring a bigger amount in his bottles and we had to go out and buy the bigger ones and suddenly had double the bottle stash that we once had!

  • I would recommend registering for 2 of the larger size bottles of a few different brands. Maybe Dr. Browns, Playtex ventaire, Avent and Breastflow.

My EBF baby is not one to really take a bottle and we've gone through 4 different kinds but the one she is the best with is the cheapy Playtex Drop in (go figure). The Breastflow was also a winner but I find it a total PITA to clean and the nipple collapses, but some babies really like it and I felt like it didn't mess with her latch like the others did.

Every baby is different but you can't return bottles so one or two will be enough to see if they like it. I agree with pp who said get the bigger bottles. I have tons of small bottles just sitting around and have no idea what to do with them.

Make sure you get the slowest flow nipples.

  • I think four bottles is good to start with, if you plan to EBF. My kids have used Avent, Playtex Drop-Ins and Playtex Vent Aire, with success. My fave is the Vent Aire. If you go with those, get the wider bottles since the bigger nipples are easier for a BF baby to adjust to. I believe all Playtex bottles come with fast flow nipples, so you definitely want to buy some slow nipples. If you want to limit the number of bottles you'll need overall, then go with 8 or 9 oz bottles.

My advice is to introduce the bottle early on, like within two weeks. I waited a month before trying to give DD2 a bottle, and it was hell trying to get her to take it. She never really took it until I went back to work at 12 weeks, and even then she would only take it from MIL when I wasn't around. She would not take a bottle whatsoever from DH until she was 5 months old! I couldn't have him help with feedings, or really leave her alone with him so I could get out of the house. DD1, on the other hand, had bottles and breast from the get-go, and we never had a problem getting her to feed however it was offered, from whoever offered it.

Totally agree with this, my pedi even said he thinks "nipple confusion" is crap, DS went from bottle to paci to breast just fine from 1 week old and on. I have other friends that tried to introduce the bottle at 3 months right before returning to work and it was a nightmare for them and made the DC transition more stressful

  • We have had to try a lot of different bottles and nipples. LO did not take any wide nipples for several weeks. He now will take the Born Free wide bottles. However, I think that the Playtex VentAire has been the most successful for us - especially the nipples. We tried the Pampers ones... didn't like those. He also uses the Medela bottles with the Playtex nipples. LO is 5.5 weeks and we have yet to use any of our 8 oz bottles. All the bottles we use are 6 oz or smaller. Right now he eats about 4-5 oz a feeding.

  • I meant to add don't buy Nuby bottles! They are the worst. I registered for the breast-size Nuby bottles with DD1, and threw them away very quickly. They leaked like crazy and were a PITA to screw on.

  • I agree with pp'. However, if you are using daycare you may want 8-10 bottles once you go back to work, so that you are not washing bottles everyday.

We use the breastflow ones. We tried the Thinkbaby ones and they were too slow flow. DH didn't like the idea of the Playtex vents with all of the disposable parts...
