Austin Babies

has anyone had vbac on here?

i'm very frustrated with my pre-natal care for many reasons (and mostly just bitter that i live in a city where i can't use a midwife at a hospital) and i tried meeting with a new doctor this week and didn't get any better of a feeling from them than my current doc.

i'm just so frustrated and i feel like i'm going to end up with a c-section if i stay with my current practice even though they act vbac friendly.

any advice?

Re: has anyone had vbac on here?

  • I have not, but my BFF has.  Her first baby was emergency c/s.  She has had FOUR vaginal births since then.  Her first 4 babies were delivered by the same doc, who did vbac, but retired a few years ago.  Her last baby (born in August) was delivered by Dr. Schmidt (I think) at S. Austin Medical Center.

In fact, bff had a different dr at the beginning of pregnancy #5, but changed to Dr. Schmidt when she learned that the first dr refused to do vbac.  Dont' know if you are South, but if you are I can confirm her dr's name if you are interested.  I know that she ended up really liking this doctor a lot.

I know it would be far, but have you considered trekking up to north austin to deliver at NAMC? You could be in a hospital w/ a midwife.

fwiw- at my 12 week appt I plan on having a verrrry open conversation w/ my ob/gyn about my desire for a vbac. we'll see how it goes.

  • I know it's north, but I thought NAMC was using midwives now with Dr. Seybastian? I don't think that's how you spell her name, but I know a few of the nesties have seen her.
  • I have not, but a couple ladies in my playgroup have. I think they go to Women Partners in Health (Dr. Yium) and Dr. Mirto (different practice). Also, ditto PP re NAMC.
  • There are some other VBAC friendly docs in north austin that I know one of my friends is using.

I posted on another list for you to get some south austin recs--I will email you off list.

  • thanks amylisa- i made an appt with dr. schmitz :)  and thanks borah! i'd love any reccs!

namc is too far for us- we live south and you aren't guaranteed to deliver with the midwife- you are stuck with whoever is on rotation, unless my understanding of it is incorrect.  :(

  • Your understanding of Sebestyen's office is correct. You rotate through each provider for your visits and then who ever you get is who you get. Thankfully--I love them all :)

I agree--that drive is killer and if you went at rush hour--forget it. You are not moving up Mopac.

  • have you considered a home birth midwife? it may be out of the question for you/out of your comfort zone, but if you do want to consider it, i would highly recommend meeting/consulting w/ GB Khalsa. she is a well-respected MW who's been around a long time and recently delivered a sucessful VBAC w/a friend of mine (and i'm sure she's done many more). she assisted my nurse midwife (julia bower) who I would also highly recommend but I may guess is GB has done more VBACs than Julia. i hope you find the right fit for you!
  • I don't know if you would consider a midwife in a free standing center (i.e. not a hospital), but my experience at the Austin Birthing Center was a million times better than when I had my first at a hospital. ?Birthing Centers do emergency transfers to hospitals if needed. ?
  • I just wanted to add the drive to NAMC isn't that bad.  I drove from Kyle there for all my doctors appointments and to deliver.
It was never terrible and I never minded.
  • When my sister wanted a vbac, she also hired a doula. The doula helped her a lot in terms of being an advocate with the medical staff and advising on how to keep to her birth plan. The vbac ended up being successful. No recs on a hospital, though, since this was in SC.
