Holocaust was my first thought- as it affected people worldwide, not just Americans, but it was an event that took place longer than 24 hours... My first would also be 9/11... I cried for days after it. I didn't even know anyone who had been immediately affected by it, but it was so heartwrenching and devastating to our nation.
