difference between training pants and pull ups?

I am attempting late EC with my daughter.  So far I just put her on the toilet when I know she poops and if she does it great, otherwise I just put a diaper on.

I have read training pants maintain wetness and therefore are used for babies to get aware of peeing.

What is the difference in training pants and pull ups?

When I type in "training pants" in amazon the first one that comes up is made by Gerber but they don't look disposable.  It is a pack of three.  So do training pants need to be washed and reused?

This is my first child and I am totally clueless.

Please help

thanks

  • I think you are correct, that training pants are basically a cloth version of pull-ups.  The gerber ones you found would be washable, basically like more absorbant underwear.

  • Training pants are usually cloth, at least the ones I've seen/ used. They're a little bit thicker than underpants, but really, if your child pees in them, the pee is going to go straight through to the floor. We bought one pack and I didn't really get the point of them. Either use diapers, nothing at all (if your child is running around the house or your property) or underpants, IMO, over using training pants. One friend of mine used them underneath diapers, so that her child would feel "wet," but not wet the floor or her outfit. Again, I don't see why this couldn't be done with underpants under the diaper instead of "training pants."

With pull-ups, the main difference for us is that, as the name implies, they "pull up" instead of having to be assembled the way diapers do. They're great for that very beginning stage of potty-readiness in which your child will give you approximately 3 seconds notice that she needs to use the toilet, so they can be pulled down in a flash, unlike a diaper.

Once we were past the accident stage, we went straight to underwear and I used the training pants (washed, of course) as household cleaning rags.

Not sure. DD very rarely peed in them when we started using them. For 1 pee, they seemed to absorb fine. I have no idea if they would work overnight to contain multiple pees or for a long outing where your child might go multiple times before you can change him/her.

  • Pull-ups will only hold 1 pee for DD.  We use them during the day (when we are out) and for naps...but not overnight.  The Gerber training pants are cotton, like PP said.  We use those around the house.

Another note...I think these are what gave DD the idea on PTing in the first place b/c she felt wet.  She never felt wet in pull-ups, so it wasn't clicking.  One day in the training pants and the lightbulb went off.  GL!

  • My SIL gave us some training pants that have plastic attatched so they contain more than just the thick cotton panties. I like them, plus it's cheaper than spending money on Pull Ups since you wash and reuse them.

  • Training pants are like thicker underwear.  They also come in terrycloth.  They are to be used in conjuction with rubber pants and they're not disposible.  They are so that the child can feel wet.  Pull-Ups are just diapers that they can pull up and down.
