VBAC

Looking for thoughts on VBAC.....

Short version... our 2nd pregnancy was successful. It was a crazy battle the whole way through, but healthy baby. I asked to be induced at 40 weeks and 2 days. We were in the hospital Monday night for contractions and sent home after two hours of walking and such. Tuesday night for contractions and the same. I refused to go back unless I was brought in on a stretcher. Thursday night we were admitted and I was 3cm and 50% effaced. They gave me something to help me sleep and I think they started my antibiotics that night for being strep B. Anyhow we started pitocin Friday morning. After a day of dilating and then being fully dilated we started to push.  I pushed for 2 and 1/2 hours and was making no real progress. The babies heart rate dropped after I pushed and his head was swelling. Finally the Dr. called it that a C-section was necessary. The recovery was awful! I won't go into details, but I will say most of the pain meds didnt touch it. I also EBF. So, I am sure that didn't make it easier. I wouldn't change that for the world. But I am wondering about the VBAC process. I really want an easier recovery and be able to pick up both babies and care for them. I couldn't care for my DS other than BF for two weeks at least. It was awful trying to schedule all of my meds and the baby's feeding schedule. That took my whole day. Anyhow....  What do you think? What does or did your dr. think on the issue? What were the requirements? Was it successful? Tell me your story.

  • I was induced at 38 wks w/ my oldest. Things went well but I pushed for 1.5 hrs and they tried to straighten him out w/ forceps and it was not working so they called a c/s. I had to wait an hour still for the c/s so he still had time to come and it wasn't going to happen. I had my first VBAC 18 mos later  to a slightly heavier baby, then 23 mos later, and then 27 mos later to my biggest baby yet!

  • My c-section was just like yours.  Induction, dilated all the way, pushed for a couple hours, c-section.  I just had a VBAC with my second child and I went into labor on my own and had no problems pushing him out.  It was completely different than my first birth.

Different doctors have different "requirements" for VBAC, so I think it's a good idea to look around and ask a lot of questions so you can pick the best doctor/midwife.  Mine didn't really have any requirements for me to have a VBAC.  We talked about the circumstances that led to my c/s and he thought I had a great chance at delivering vaginally--and I did!  So I think finding the right doctor or midwife is important.

  • I live in a country where VBAC is normal. If you've had a prior c/s, it is assumed you will VBAC unless there is a reason not to. I was told before being discharged from the hospital with my first that there was no reason to think I'd need a c/s again. I was never given any requirements for a VBAC, except they asked that I come in earlier so they could monitor me sooner. (not continuous monitoring, just starting the monitoring earlier)

For me, the obstacle was myself, not the system. My three days of labor was hell and I had no intentions of doing that again. I spent a lot of time talking with my midwife about what I was and was not comfortable doing, to make sure that if it was getting to be too much for me, we could do something about it. We both agreed that my labor was so difficult because DD was sunny side up and had a tilted head, and we would pay lots of attention to the next baby's position.

My VBAC was successful.  She was in the normal position, labor was still long but not nearly as painful or intense. I pushed for half an hour, and we were discharged a mere four hours after delivery. I felt great! I am still not a big fan of being in labor, I have to say, but I'm glad I went for it.

  • Hey, I replied to you below in the other thread (https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/54041404.aspx). Definitely look into talking to a different provider, as it sounds like your dr isn't very supportive. There are women on here who've had VBACs with less than 18 or 24 months between babies.

I wasn't induced, but I pushed with DS1 for 4+ hours until it was determined he was posterior, and then I had a c-section with him. I had a successful VBAC with DS2 this past October. I didn't have any risk factors with either pg, and VBAC was a reasonable option with my second pregnancy.

  • I haven't vbac-ed yet, we are probably going to start trying again in a few months.

At 39 weeks, my dr. decided to break my water, because I was almost 6 cm dilated, 95% effaced and not in labor.  During which he found out dd was breech, so I had to have a csection.

At my 5 week pp appointment, I asked him if I could try for a vbac, and he said that he wouldn't have even considered a rcs for me.  He said I could get pregant as soon as I wanted.  But my pregnancy was very smooth, except for some bleeding/low progesterone during the first trimester.  I didn't have much swelling, weight gain, my bp was always good, and clearly I could dilated.
