What to do with 5 year old?

We're babysitting a 5 year old all weekend and we're at a loss of something FUN to do.  We thought we'd be going to his school's spring carnival but it's just not going to work out with the nap time schedule.  (DS and our visitor need naps around 12:30 and the carnival is 11-3)

He's VERY active and can be difficult to entertain.  I can' tell he's itching to get out of the house (as much as DH and I just want to veg all day)... so... ideas?

Re: What to do with 5 year old?

  • Make playdough? Go to a playground? Play in the sprinkler? Sidewalk chalk/bubbles? A very long walk?

I watched a 6 year old the other day and we went to the petting zoo and then walked down the street to the school and played in the playground. It's not THAT far, maybe a 5 minute drive but I wore her out, on the way back she was wanting to stop and rest every 2 houses. I had 10000+ steps on my fitbit by 2:30pm!

  • Can you go to a park?  My 5 yr old loves the park, art projects (cutting & pasting especially), helping in the kitchen, ummm what else?  Telling jokes, playing tag....I'll try to think of more.  :)

  • How's the weather?

Playground - bring snacks/drinks and spend a couple hours. If there's other kids you can probably sit a reasonable amount while the kids play.

Paint with water on the cement outside

    Coloring/painting

And I'd try to hit the carnival for a hour before naps if you can.

ETA: How about helping to make bread? He could help measure, knead, and then you could make dough "snakes" that he could help shape, maybe bake one in the letter of his initial.

  • Definitely the park/playground!  Do you have a sprinkler or a hose?  Thats always a good cool off after the park.

And if you get desperate and can't get outside, 5 year olds love games...board games, phone games, computer games (pbskids.org), etc.

  • We decided to go to the park in a bit.  We're chillaxin' for a few minutes.  I'll pack popsicles for the kids to eat at the playground... and maybe a yogurt squeezer or two.  We just watched cartoons and played with a gazillion toys this morning while we waited for DH to wake up.  I did let him help me mix up the batter for breakfast casserole and he played bejeweled on my phone for a bit but his attention can only be kept for about 60 seconds on any one activity.

DH and I were glad for naptime to roll around... he slept over an hour at the same time as DS.  :-D
