How common is this allergy? I found a recipe I'd like to try this week, but one of the ingredients is sesame seeds and, given DS's allergies, I am super paranoid about introducing another food he might react to. I don't know if this was included in his allergy testing, either (probably not since they didn't even test for strawberries!). I know I can't shelter him from every food he's never tried, but I can't help but worry. Someone please let me know if I'm just being paranoid, or if sesame seeds are a valid concern and should wait. TIA!
Re: Sesame Seed allergy?
my son WAS allergic to sesame seeds when tested and he outgrew it when tested the second time. The allergy is actually pretty common, it is one of the top allergies in Canada. I think it will make its way to the US top list pretty soon. Some labels highlight sesame nowadays.
What makes you think your child has a sesame allergy. So many things have sesame (which is also called tahini) and most likely she has had it in some way (well, depends on her age i guess). I felt like a sesame allergy was my biggest pain in the butt b/c he couldn't have most breads since they "may have been exposed to sesame"
have you tried giving your LO hummus? most hummus has tahini in it. If she didn't react, than you are fine. (note: there is tahini free hummus if she does have the allergy)
Thank you!! I hadn't even thought about that. He has had hummus, and didn't have an allergic reaction, so sesame seeds are probably fine. Anything near the top of the allergen lists just makes me so nervous now.
My twins are 5! My baby is 3!
