Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When did your baby start tummy time?

Right now I let DD lay on her tummy on my chest because if I put her down on a blanket, she freaks out after a couple seconds. I know she is still young but I was wondering when you start putting your DC on a play mat for tummy time... or just on a blanket.

Re: When did your baby start tummy time?

  • The day after we came home from the hospital.  They told me to start right away.

  • I also found this cool mat at BRU.

I didn't purchase it or anything but I thought this would be really neat when she had more head control.

  • DD hates tummy time after about 2 minutes, but we keep trying everyday. We started around a month or so
  • Right away.

  • We started tummy time right away. Have you tried laying down with her?

  • right away. we were lucky.... dd loves being on her tummy. she wound up with amazing head and neck control, sleeps on her tummy and rolled from back to belly by 3 months.
  • DD kept trying to hold her head up at 1 week, so we started then.  She would tolerate lying on her belly (on a blanket) for about 5 minutes, then I would flip her over and we'd play for another 5 or so.  Now that she can hold her head up a lot better, I alternate between lying flat on her belly or using the Boppy so she gets a better view.  She's good for about 10-15 minutes before she gets frustrated.

  • DS had pretty good head control right away, so we started the day after we got home.

  • We started at about 3 weeks. Before then we would just lay her on our chests. Now we do tummy-time for about 15-20 mins a day (or until she gets bored)
  • Keep in mind that tummy time on your chest counts!!!  DD#1 HATED tummy time with a passion.  She'd bury her face and cry instantly.  Her ped said that tummy time on our chest might be our best bet.  That wasn't much better...and she's a perfectly healthy 2.5 year old.

Try and try, but don't totally stress yourself out if she hates it.  Some babies just don't like it.
