2nd + time moms: stripping membranes?!

What was your experience getting your membranes stripped?  Did you have it done or did  you opt out of it?  I was lurking on the June 2011 board and I've heard some friends talk about it, but I didn't know much about it to decide if I should have it done or not.  Opinions?!  TIA

  • I decided no, I also wouldn't let them induce me, I promised them I'd go into labor naturally...I was a bit of a freak, but I did, 6 days late!

  • I declined. The chances of it doing anything other than making you really uncomfortable is just too slim.

My poor SIL was a bit misinformed and was 100% convinced that stripping her membranes was going to send her into labor. Needless to say, it didn't....and she was SO disappointed.

  • i had mine done on a friday morning.  if it works, then it does by 36 hours.  my water broke monday night, so it didn't work for me.  it didn't really hurt, just uncomfortable.  if the dr asks me this time if i want to try it instead of going straight to induction, i will say yes.

  • I have decided that I want to go as natural as possible.  I told my MW at my last appt that I don't want to be induced.  She had asked about drugs.  I will probably get an epidural, but I don't want to be induced and have the epi.  I've heard the labor is worst with an induction and will only do it if it is absolutely necessary.

  • I had it done with both my prior pregnancies at my 40 week appt.  With DD the dr was extremely rough and it hurt.  I actually called out and scooted away from her.  I had instant cramping that progressed into labor.  With DS it was a different dr and done completely different. That time it felt like a rough internal...a little uncomfortable but not painful.  I had little to no cramping and nothing started.  In fact, I was induced at 41 weeks.  It is hard to know if it was the difference in technique or just the readiness of my body that caused the different outcomes.

  • Thanks ladies .. definitely something to think about when the time comes.

  • I had it done at 39ish weeks. My water broke a couple of days later but my labor never started and I had to be induced. I will not do it again unless I'm 41 weeks.
  • They did it with my first pregnancy, the day of my due date.  DS#1 didn't come 'til four days after his due date.  I wonder if they hadn't done, if he had come at all! LOL!

They didn't do it with DS#2 cause he came on his due date.  It's not a big deal really.

  • My OB gave it a try at my 40w appointment and I stopped her. It was way painful for me so I decided to wait. DS was born at 40w6d.

  • My OB tried it last pregnancy at my late 38/early 39 week appointment. It didn't work for me. I had to be induced at 39 weeks 1 day because of Asthma issues. It was uncomfortable, almost painful, for me. I won't do it again since I'm having a repeat c-section.

  • There is risk that they could break your water when doing it, and then you're immediately on the clock and if baby isn't born within a certain time frame, you're automatically sent to c-section.  that time frame is different for each hospital, but still...it's there and it's a risk.  It doesn't always happen when stripping, but it COULD.   For the most part, stripping is really only going to help if you are teetering on the edge of going into labor already.  It MIGHT help put you over the edge.  Otherwise, it will just hurt and cause lots of really uncomfortable backache and cramping.
  • My OB didn't even suggest it, we went straight to induction (8 days late).

  • I did not get my membranes stripped. I went in for my 41 week appt and due to BP issues, was induced that afternoon, but wound up having a c-section the next morning since I wasn't progressing as I should have.
