How to build a stash?

Please help me.  I am sure it is asked a lot.  I wasn't planning on going back to work except for subbing here and there.  However, my boyfriend lost his job a month ago and so I have been applying everywhere to find anything.

I only have a freezer stash of 12 oz because I didn't think I would need any more.  What are some tips?  Is it really just pump after every feeding and keep upping the supply?  Should I wake up in the middle of the night and add a "feeding" to pump back in the schedule?

  • I probably wouldn't pump after every time  you nurse...you don't want to trick your body into building an oversupply you don't need.  I would start with pumping after the first feeding in the morning (because that is typically when you will have the most milk) and another time later in the day.  That way you slowly build up your stash without causing an oversupply issue.

I'm lazy and never pump after a feeding. Instead, once LO started sleeping through the night, I substituted it with a midnight pumping session. So I continue to get up between 1am - 2am to pump even though LO sleeps. I found that easier than pumping and have a decent freezer stash of at least 80 oz. I generally am up for no longer than 30 minutes.

  • I agree with pumping first thing in the morning.  I would feed off of one side and pump the other.  I got a pretty good size stash by doing that every day.
