Anyone compost?

I would love to get a tiny compost bin.   We are in a condo, so we don't have a lot of outdoor space, but I'd like to get small one (like ten gallon or less) to go on our patio.  Does anyone have any idea where I can find one?  I checked home depot and lowes.  I'd rather not order online if I can help it.

  • Check with your garbage pickup/city.  Tacoma and Federal Way both offer them at a discount (or at least have in the past).

  • If I were you I would probably just make one. I am sure there are a lot of DIY links out there.

  • If you don't have a lot of outdoor space, what would you use the compost for? It's best for use in mending soil in flower beds and takes a good 6 mo or so to compost. If you're mostly wanting to compost food scraps, it's probably not worth the effort. There has to be a balance of brown and green waste, meaning grass clippings and dry leaves as examples. If you don't have much of a yard it will be had to get enough to start composting. You'll just end up with rotting food that will attract rodents. Sorry to poop on your idea.

  • My husband has a small raised garden outside that we would use it for.  This is why I want only a small one.  It wouldn't be a way to get rid of food scraps, it would be for the garden.

  • Your yard waste bin can now compost any food scrap and a lot of packaging too = yay!

We have the green cone compost ($25 now, we got it free back in the day as a promotion - buries into ground) - but yes, have it far away from the house because yeah, the fruit flies are obnoxious!

  • We have a small worm compost bin that we bought at the Puyallup Fair a couple of years ago. My DH loves it!

  • In your situation I would do a worm bin vs a composter.

I just googled worm bin (I'm not "in the know") and yes, that looks perfect for us.

    Thanks.

  • We vermicompost in a set of nested Rubbermaid bins on our balcony. I got the worms from freecycle. Just drill some holes near the top of the box for ventilation and in bottom for drainage.
