white tongue on DD, could it be thrush?

My mom noticed yesterday that my 3 week LO has a little bit of a white tongue.  She said it could be the start of thrush?  I looked it up and I think it could be.  I don't seem to notice anywhere but on her tongue.  Doesn't seem to bother her, but now that I know it could be something that shouldn't be, I am starting to wonder.

Re: white tongue on DD, could it be thrush?

  • We went to dr yesterday because of our DS.  They called it milk tongue because it was only on his tongue (not inside of cheeks or lips, etc) and I didn't have bright pink irritated nipples.  Milk tongue is harmless and our dr. doesn't necessarily treat thrush if it isn't affecting nursing or weight gain.  Call your dr. if you aren't sure.

  • My nurse said try to wipe it off - if it does, it's milk. If it doesn't, it's probably thrush.

Thanks!  I am FF and think you might be right, milk tongue...hehe!  I will try to check the insides of her cheeks, but it is not an easy task.  Good to know, thanks for responding.

I figure I might just ask the doc when we go in a couple weeks to be on the safe side, unless it should get worse, then I will call him.

  • It could be thrush or if she spits up a lot, that could be it. DD had a patch of it on the inside of her cheek bc I was taking antibiotics while nursing, it went away on its own after a few days.

  • i would def have someone look at it or do the wipe test. my LO has thrush right now and he's had it for the past 4 weeks. pretty much since we started nursing. he's 6 weeks. i thought nothing of it at first....thought it was milk tongue. when he was looked at by my midwife she said it was thrush but a small case of it.  it did look like milk tongue but some of it didn't come off. we've gone through 2 diff treatments and he still has it and it's worse. it's not really causing me any pain but i do have occasionally pain in the breast. we're now trying gentian violet. hope it works!

  • I would not wait for a few weeks for the baby to be looked at bc yeast is easily transferred from baby to you and can go back and forth if not treated.

I realized we had thrush when my nipple was in excruciating, burning, pain. Then I noticed her tongue.  If the baby has thrush you should sterilize everything he/she uses every day. My pedi never mentioned anything about needing to have white patches else where besides tongue and my daughter only has it on the tongue but I am certain we have thrush due to symptoms on my breast/nipple.

  • Thrush does not have to be on the sides of mouth or cheeks.  My DS has had it twice...once all over and once only on his tongue.  Thankfully I have not developed it...Doc gave me a prescription to prevent it.  But left untreated it can be passed back and forth from baby to mom...an I hear its very painful if mom gets it.   GL

I took Natalie to the doctor yesterday and I am glad I did.  It is thrush and saw actually that it went a ways back on her tongue.  I wonder if that is why she has so much spit up and mucus caught in her throat.

She is on a medicine now, 2ml, that she gets in her mouth 4 times a day until we go for her wellness check next week.  I am so glad I was better safe than sorry and it could have gotten worse.

     Thanks ladies!
