Lactose intolerant - please help!

How did you know your baby was lactose intolerant?  What are you feeding your baby?  My Dr suggested soy-based formula, but I'd like to know if there are other options out there.  My baby's stool is liquid (like pea soup,) and the hole it comes out of is very sore and red-looking. (We are, of course, using diaper rash ointment to minimize the pain.)  He's only 2 weeks old, and this issue just appeared about 4 days ago.  Please share your experiences and suggestions.  Thanks!

  • the only other baby that I know that is lactose intolerant drinks soy as well

  • Is your doctor thinking lactose intolerance or milk allergy?

The reason I'm asking is that lactose intolerance is extroidinarily rare in babies. Almost unheard of. That is, an intolerance to milk sugars.

What is much more common is milk allergy, or, an allergy to the proteins in cow's milk.

If it is lactose intolerance, there are lactose free formulas. (Lactofree, for example.)

If it is milk protein allergy, you can either breast-feed after mom eliminates dairy, try soy (there will still be 50% cross reactivity to soy proteins) or go straight to an elemental formula such as nutramigen.
