At this morning's well visit, our pedi brought up starting Henry on rice or oatmeal cereal. I just don't think I'm ready

. I feel like he's getting too big too fast. Some questions that I should have asked her: Do I choose between rice or oatmeal or try one and then try the other? Is one a better option? How long do they stay on this before starting vegetables? She said two weeks but I think that sounded like a pretty big jump, but I'm wondering if I misheard. I'm sorry this is so junbled; I'm on my iPhone.

Re: Talk to me about solids....
There is no reason to start early, unless he is eating you out of house and home with his formula. We waited until LO's were 6 mos (5 mos adjusted). DS was ready, DD was not that interested. He would open his mouth for the spoon, she would not. I'd have to put it to her lips and she'd eventually slurp some of it off. She didn't start opening her mouth till she was 8 mos old.
As for which cereal to start with - any of the single grains are fine - rice, oatmeal, barley. Personally, the rice was not constipating for either of my LO's. They are very bland, so after a few feedings of plain cereal, I started mixing in a little fruit puree. We did oatmeal/fruit in the morning and rice/fruit mix in the evening.
Don't rush it - if you/he are not ready. It is a lot more work and less fun than you think
We actually tried to start Jacob at 4 months, thinking that it would help with his reflx and he simply wasn't ready. He was pushing the food out of his mouth whenever it went in.
We tried again about 6 weeks later at 5.5 months and he was more ready.
There is NO reason to start solids if he isn't ready. I have never believed that most 4 month olds are ready for solids...sure, some are, but my guess is that most aren't.
It is perfectly fine to wait...and you can skip cereal when you do. It is pretty much nutritionally worthless, except for the fact that it is fortified with iron, and I am NOT a big fan of things that are fortified.

Thanks girls. I am going to hold off for another month. I have off from work almost the entire month of July so I think that will be a great time to start it all. I think he (read: me) will be ready then.
Gen, I wrote back.
Thanks!
