NBR - What say ye, 69ers?

Is the new US "plate" instead of "pyramid" more or less helpful?

image

I like that it's a plate.  Because it looks like a pie chart and who doesn't like pie?!

Andplusalso, the comments here are making me haz a sad.

Re: NBR - What say ye, 69ers?

  • I like it.  I think its way more useful to the average person than the pyramid.  Plus it focuses on portion control which is a huge problem for Americans.  I also like pie.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

In theory I think it's easier to understand than the pyramid but do I think it will actually help?  No.  I honestly think America is beyond help when it comes to our health.

  • I like it. I like pie.

But there is no option for pie!

No..wait.  Crust=grains and filling=fruit.  The ice cream on top is the dairy.

    Perfect!

  • Much easier to understand than the pyramid. I think it's great. I have actually been trying to make my plate more like it.

  • I can see how it's more useful to people, and I can see the appeal of the pie chart look. But the asymmetry of the "pie pieces" is really throwing me off. I know the intent is to show that you should have more veggies and grains than protein and fruit, but it's bugging my brain. That's a personal issue, though.

I glanced at the comments, but I don't get what the objection is. Are they upset that it doesn't say, "McDonald's is evil," or "No sugar for you!"?

I saw one version of the pie chart where one half just said "Veggies and fruits".  I do agree that fruits and veggies are half-plate worthy.  Moreso than grains and proteins.

Yeah, the commenters are being jerks.  It's definitely a "people should know better and Government get out of my life!" vibe.

  • I like it bc it focuses on portion control. The mean comments can suck it. Also, I love the food divider/portion control plastic plate thing you posted the other day C_G. I saw it on Amazon for $5 less and I think I am going to get it.

I dig it. I'm a visual learner and the pyramid is hard to visualize when you're about to chow down.

My MIL doesn't like pie, cake, chocolate, ice cream, cookies. Who lives like that????

Oh and I almost never assemble meals this way (separate veg, grain, protein), and definitely do not drink my dairy. But that may be because of the vegetarianism. The plate is probably good for the typical meat & potatoes meal... well if people could figure out how to classify potatoes nutritionally.

I disagree.  Protein doesn't have to equal meat.

  • I like it and think that it is more easily understood how much someone should eat.  It makes it easier for people to put a real amount to the number of servings.  As far as the experts (nutritionists and the like) they LOVE it and think it is a great step in helping people eat healthier.

I totally agree about the comments. People take their nom nom's very seriously, do they not?

    My personal favorite:

Also, the fact that dairy is in there is bull ***.  You wouldn't drink gorilla breast milk, so why would you drink cow breast milk?  Because the powerful dairy industry tells you to...that's why.

    It's a conspiracy,yo! Big Tobacco, Big Oil...Big Dairy?

I like it. But then again, I like pie charts too.

    Pie.

    I like it.

Kirky, are you having pie cravings? ;-)

PS when I was pregly that was the one thing I actually craved. Apple pie. I would polish one off in a few days. (OK I craved tater tots too).

    LOL obviously protein =/= meat.

You and Hecky are both missing my point.

What I'm saying is, I never make meals with a scoop of veggies, a scoop of protein, a scoop of grain. And I think it may be what I cook as a veg, whereas a lot of meat and potatoes types will do variations of that (chicken, pasta, broccoli....steak, rice, green beans...fish, quinoa, spinach...etc).

I think you're overthinking this.  The plate isn't saying you have to strictly conform to those rules.  It's more saying that having a 3/4 plate of mashed potatoes, 1/4 plate of meat and a couple of peas waved somewhere near the plate isn't a good thing.

Also, I think a lot of people would do better if they did do a "scoop" of something.  At least that's what WW does.  You have to measure our your portions so you know that a serving of rice equals 1 cup of cooked rice so you get out the trusty old measuring cup.  Big Smile

this. it really is just a pie chart. i don't think they are plating instructions. i organize my food alphabetically on the plate anyway.

I thought the original pyramid was pretty good. The new one was stupid. I rank the plate between the two. It is probably a good visual tool for people unfamiliar with what serving sizes should look like.

  • I think of the program in terms of accessibility for my children.  When I saw it unveiled yesterday, I immediately wanted it on  a plate.  I would buy a ceramic set of 8" plates w/this visual on it. Because that's really easy for the kids to understand.
