NBR: Hardwood Floor Installation

We're within weeks of closing on our house and we're going to be installing hardwood floors in the bottom half of the house (foyer/kitchen/guest bath already have hardwoods) but we want the entire first floor to be hardwoods and here's what we've been quoted:

*New hardwoods in one 18' x 14' room (252 sq feet)

*New hardwoods in one 13' x 11' room (143 sq feet)

*replacing a few planks in the foyer (where there's water damage) and sanding/re-finishing to match (this area is ~16 sq feet)

Total quote for everything including supplies/labor/removal, etc.: $3,725

I'm going to get one additional quote, but curious from others with experience, is this a good, bad, fair quote? I haven't backed out the numbers for what he's charging us per square foot, but if it helps, the materials are true hardwoods, not thin engineered hardwoods.

Meh. I wish we were handy enough to do it ourselves...

Re: NBR: Hardwood Floor Installation

  • I think it is a killer deal.  He is charging you less than a $1/sqft. (It appears based on what you provided)  Especially since you are having true hardwoods, which I'm sure includes the staining and sealing.  Still get another quote, but I think it is a good deal.

  • It depends on type of hardwood, type of finish (how many coats) and most importantly how good of a job they do.

We recently (December) had 330 feet of mahogany hardwood installed. Breakdown was $5.11 sq. ft for the wood and $2 sq/ft for everything else (sanding, top coat water based seal. I think it was 3 coats.) It was dirt cheap but they didn't seal & clean the room very well before doing all the top coats so the quality of the work was not great....but it is just a MIL unit, not our everyday area. These were just handymen, not flooring specialists...flooring specialist wanted about $500 more.

By comparison the big box retailer wanted $12 sq/ft for the (exact same manufacture and) hardwood and $4 sq/ft to install.

  • That's a magical price.  You'd pay that much for materials if you were doing it yourself.

  • Bwa ha ha. Yes happy to pass on the contact info via email, but don't want to post it here because I want to be sensitive to this company's bottom line, especially if they are giving a friend of a friend quote. This contractor came at the referral of a friend who owns several properties and uses this company for all remodeling/flooring work. So maybe I am getting a friend deal.

Also, to answer the questions, it is red oak true hardwood flooring and 3 coats, and thorough cleaning afterwards. I gather red oak is less expensive than mahagany or Brazilian cherry. Mmmm Brazilian cherry. I wish, but then we'd have to rip out all the existing hardwoods too.

Thanks for the help ladies, sounds like we are getting a great deal.

  • Rather than posting my email, could you PM, please?  Thanks!

What's your math on that?  For me it comes to slightly less than $10/sq ft. (total square footage is ~395)

  • I think I missed a "0", but I have it at ~411sqft which puts it at a little less than $10/sqft.  We couldn't find it for under $15/sqft. and that was for the premade hardwoords. :-/
Perhaps I should read my posts a bit better, lol!  I wish it was less than a $1/sqft.
