Baby's Sense of Hearing

Hi, all.

Has anyone noticed that their LO responds specifically and/or consistently to noise stimulation, whether it be music or someone talking to him/her?  My baby doesn't seem to react to any deliberate noise...when DH talks to him or when I've tried putting headphones with music on my belly, for example.

The rational part of me says that maybe he's just used to sound in general and that what he hears is so muffled, but the paranoid FTM part worries that maybe something is wrong with his hearing.

Does anyone have any input?  Any would be appreciated....

Re: Baby's Sense of Hearing

  • The only time I've noticed LO reacting to noise was when I dropped a pot onto other pots and pans and he seemed to jump/kick at the noise, poor little guy. There was something else I dropped later that caused a loud bang and he reacted the same way.

I haven't actually tried headphones, but DH has tried talking right up against my stomach a few times with no reaction.

  • A few times I have noticed LO react to my voice - like, when I have been silent for a long time and all of a sudden I start talking, I feel her.

I also had a NST yesterday and they "buzzed" her. Let me tell you, she reacted to that! Poor thing.

ETA: I just realized I was one of those annoying people that respond to your worry telling you I don't have that problem. Other than that, she does not respond to any noise. I can't ever remember DD responding to noise in utero at all and she has hearing like a bat now.

  • My LO seems to move a lot when I am driving home and I crank up the radio and sing!

  • I've not noticed my LO to respond to specific noise/ music/ etc.  She kicks (well, squirms now) on and off all day so if I'm driving in the car with the music blaring I can't be sure if she was going to be moving anyway or if it's because of the music.  I'm not worried though.

  • Sometimes she'll react to music and more often than not she'll react to the sound of her Daddy's voice...but its not always predictable.  She's far more reactive to external stimulation (pushing/poking) than noise.

  • There is one particular song that he seems to move around to a lot more than others when we are listening with headphones.  But other than that, I can't really pinpoint whether or not he is actually responding to a sound or just moving around randomly.  More than likely, baby is hearing noises but just doesn't have a response at this time!

  • Currently, I've noticed LO really only responds to abdominal pressure. When I was pregnant with DD, sometime around 30 weeks I noticed that she responded to auditory stimuli.
