2nd Trimester

Ummm, wow....?

So an older lady I work with is telling people openly at the front desk that "the blacks" won it for "that man" and "those people" shouldn't be allowed to vote.  Uhhhh, WTF?  I work for a public university, I think I'm going to go ahead and put a formal complaint in to HR.  I mean, I get she's old this might just be a weird generational thing that I can't comprehend, but it's so far out of the realm of what's appropriate that I just can't let it go...  I can't even believe that things like this get said out loud let alone in an office.

What would you do?

  • knowing me, I'd be internally annoyed, but I'd let it go.....

But I think filing a complaint with HR is completely justified...

  • Old people have a mind of their own and are stuck in their own way of thinking. My grandma would probably say the same thing unfortunately.
  • IMO, she's entitled to her own opinion.  I don't believe what she said, but it is freedom of speech I guess!

  • I would absolutely put in a complaint to HR. That is not acceptable for any workplace especially a university.
  • Something needs to be said.  I mean what you said, she probably doesn't comprehend generationally what she's saying, but she can't be saying stuff like that.   It's bad representation for your university.

  • Wow! I am sure it is a generation thing, but still, she cannot do that!!! I am not sure if I would file a complaint, but it's totally justifiable for you to do so!

  • yeah... definitely uncalled for.  It's probably some sort of generational thing that we just don't understand cause we weren't raised like that... but she's also old enough to know when and where she just needs to keep her mouth shut.  If she really feels the need to make those comments then she should only do it in the company of her fellow racist old geezers.

  • File the complaint. You'd hate for the wrong person to hear and for the school to get a bad reputation or some type of huge controversy.

  • That is terrible!! Old people really don't get it. Even if you dont agree, kee t to yourself. Especially something like that. It's just ignorance!
  • Um yea.  My co-worker (the one who didn't vote, if you remember my post from yesterday) made a comment this morning that, "if HE won we'll know how many black people are in the US."  Indifferent WOW!  Does that make me black since I voted for him?

  • Old or not, free speech or not, that is completely unacceptable in a workplace.

I'm sure her boss would like to  know that she is talking like that at work - something needs to be said because that could reflect poorly on the university.

    Wow.  So sad.

  • I live in an area that has a good percentage of families that believe in White Supremacy. Though it is becoming more far and few between, it is still around here. I wonder if they are planning a revolt? I bet they are all just cringing right now.

  • Yea - she could get fired for that very easily.....she better be careful.
  • I would've choked that b*tch...simple as that. How scary!
  • that is completely unprofessional behavior and I'm sorry, but free speech does not apply in this case. This woman is at the front desk blabbing this nonsense. She is entitled to her opinion, but her behavior at the front desk is a representation of her employer, and frankly, she should be fired.
  • Complain to HR.  At the least, it will let her know she can't spout off like that.  If the wrong person overheard her saying that, she could get herself attacked for saying something so horrible.
  • Yeah, I think you should totally file a complaint. Just because she is old doesn't mean she gets to make offensive discriminatory remarks freely... At least not while she's on the job. If she wants to run around campus, on the other hand, screaming such drivel, she's free to do so... But creating a hostile work environment is def not OK.

  • Wow I am completely shocked at some of the responses here....so far I have heard her excused for her age - generation:  So if my 86 year old grandmother says something like that - then what she gets a free pass - NO!  They know the difference between right and wrong....

Then there are some in here that says - I dont know if I would go to HR - WHAT?  So let me see - you would let this woman rant and rave and not report it to HR?  I am hoping you meant that you would pull her off to the side and tell her how horrible her behavior was and if she didnt stop you would then report her to HR.  I think by ignoring the problem you are enabling the situation.

....and people wonder why African-Americans "just cant let it go" - UGH

  • Please complain to HR.  First because you work in education, second because you were at work and third because its not true.  Us blacks didnt put him in office alone.   It was everyone that helped get "that man" in office.   Smile

  • Um...Mrs. Bible, I couldn't agree more. It is absolutely inexcusable. If you have an ignorant opinion like that, you should know well enough to keep it to yourself!
  • I'm passive aggressive... I would stew about it all day and probably not end up doing a damn thing about it.

  • I'd file a complaint-- racism is not acceptable, especially in a work place.
Mom of 3 year old, one year old and one on the way (due late Summer 2013).
  • I would also report her.  It's completely unacceptable - especially as a representitive of an institution of learning.
  • File a complaint.  Noone is "entitled" to voice their racist opinions at work where other people are forced to listen to them.
