Ok to take baby out?

Hello all :)  when is it ok to take the baby out? I know that they haven't totally built their immune system until the 2 month mark, but I am also breastfeeding which i know is supposed to help with that.  Is it ok to take her out say to a store? I am very leery of it and just wanted to see how other people handled it.  She's just now at the 2 week mark :)

Re: Ok to take baby out?

  • I took my baby out as soon as I felt up to it. We went to church and a party for my work at 1 week. If you're not even letting people hold him, I really wouldn't worry. He's not out licking the carts yet. You need to worry more about washing your own hands when you're out, with or without him.

Especially if you're breastfeeding, get back to the world. Baby gets some immunity to whatever is floating around via your breastmilk.

  • We brought DD3 out at 3 days old.  It was to Target and I needed to get out, plus she needed clothes...apparently my other DDs were much bigger then her!

We are also going to the grocery store this afternoon.  She is 6 days old.

  • I have taken our LO out several times (mostly on walks). The weather was nasty for a long time, so the first nice day I put her in the stroller and walked up to Walgreen's. She was fine, slept the whole time. Just keep baby covered from direct sunlight and don't forge to wash your hands after and you should be fine.

  • I took DD out yesterday for the first time.  We went to the grocery stores and the park for a bit with DS and my mom.  My pedi actually told us todayit is okay to continue taking her out, especially outside when the weather is nice.  I don't let anyone touch her while out and she usually stays in her carseat in the stores.

  • We went out to do a hearing screening at 2 weeks and to a mum's group a few days after.  We went back to DD#1's playgroup this week and are going to our mum group again today.  Getting out is part of life for us, i'd go crazy cooped up here with a preschooler and a newborn.

  • I know we went somewhere before one week but I can't remember where and then I took her out alone at one week to the grocery store and 1w1d to church. She's still alive and doing fine.

  • Thank you everyone!!!!
  • The day we got out of the hospital (making Jack 2 days old) we went to Meijer and went grocery shopping and filled my prescriptions. We stayed in about 2 more days I think before we went out to eat with him (at my FI's work) and then to a birthday/memorial day party when he was a week old. Today we went for a walk in our neighborhood so we didn't have to be cooped up in the house. It's seriously been crazy weather wise here and the other day it was 96 degrees so we went to Target to just get somewhere cooler than our house because conviently our A/C broke right before it started getting hot out.
Our doctor just basically said if you feel up to it, go ahead and get out. Like PP said, it's not like they are out licking the bars of the shopping carts and stuff yet.
  • I remember where I went before E was a week old! We went to the park for NB photos (which I still haven't gotten back yet because according to my SIL, "some of us have jobs." Because I didn't just have a baby or anything.)

We also went to the ER for my raging UTI. Ah, good times that first week.

  • We have been everywhere, and it's all good and dandy. As long as you wash your hands a lot, and don't pass him around to a ton of people, you'll be fine.

  • We've been taking DD out since she was 4 or 5 days old. I asked my pedi about that this morning and she said to go for it! If it was winter time, she wouldn't want me taking her out because of the sicknesses floating around. I don't let people hold her when we're out, though- I think I'm going to wait a couple more weeks on that one.

DD2 is 16 days old and she been in a crowded tornado shelter (at 1 wk old) around all kinds of people, been in a 1st grade class (took her to see my class at 10 days old), passed around my friends at school, Target, Best Buy, grocery store, playground, walks, doctor's office, Kohl's, and that is all I can think of right now. going to the mall this weekend too.

  • Grayson was 3 days old and we took him to FI's brothers house for a BBQ and there were about 20-25 adults/kids.  We didn't 'pass him around', he did fine thugh.  Just slept most of the time.  We've been to my OB's, and the pedi twice and the lactaion consultant once, the park three times - he is 8 days old.  No way would I stay cooped up in the house! :)
  • At 4 days old DD went to the grocery.  DH and I had taken her to the pedi and didn't want to make another trip out.  She slept the whole time. I've taken her on errands several times this weekand she isn't even 2 weeks old yet.
