So an older lady I work with is telling people openly at the front desk that "the blacks" won it for "that man" and "those people" shouldn't be allowed to vote. Uhhhh, WTF? I work for a public university, I think I'm going to go ahead and put a formal complaint in to HR. I mean, I get she's old this might just be a weird generational thing that I can't comprehend, but it's so far out of the realm of what's appropriate that I just can't let it go... I can't even believe that things like this get said out loud let alone in an office.
What would you do?
Re: Ummm, wow....?
knowing me, I'd be internally annoyed, but I'd let it go.....
But I think filing a complaint with HR is completely justified...
IMO, she's entitled to her own opinion. I don't believe what she said, but it is freedom of speech I guess!
Something needs to be said. I mean what you said, she probably doesn't comprehend generationally what she's saying, but she can't be saying stuff like that. It's bad representation for your university.
File the complaint. You'd hate for the wrong person to hear and for the school to get a bad reputation or some type of huge controversy.
Um yea. My co-worker (the one who didn't vote, if you remember my post from yesterday) made a comment this morning that, "if HE won we'll know how many black people are in the US."
WOW! Does that make me black since I voted for him?

Old or not, free speech or not, that is completely unacceptable in a workplace.
I'm sure her boss would like to know that she is talking like that at work - something needs to be said because that could reflect poorly on the university.
Wow. So sad.
Wow I am completely shocked at some of the responses here....so far I have heard her excused for her age - generation: So if my 86 year old grandmother says something like that - then what she gets a free pass - NO! They know the difference between right and wrong....
Then there are some in here that says - I dont know if I would go to HR - WHAT? So let me see - you would let this woman rant and rave and not report it to HR? I am hoping you meant that you would pull her off to the side and tell her how horrible her behavior was and if she didnt stop you would then report her to HR. I think by ignoring the problem you are enabling the situation.
....and people wonder why African-Americans "just cant let it go" - UGH
Please complain to HR. First because you work in education, second because you were at work and third because its not true. Us blacks didnt put him in office alone. It was everyone that helped get "that man" in office.
I'm passive aggressive... I would stew about it all day and probably not end up doing a damn thing about it.
