I hate confrontation. Is there a proper way to do this?

My boss wouldn't give me the option of going part time so she sort of saw it coming. We'd talked about it a couple times and she finally came out and asked me what my plans were.

You're giving them a lot of notice so they shouldn't be too upset! I love being a stay at home mom! It was a little scary at first, quitting my job, but I really love it!

No paid maternity leave. Right now they think I'll be gone for 3 months. So they don't plan on hiring a temp they just think someone else here can "cover" my position. This is bullshit. I have a degree in graphic design. I do pre-press and file prep and design at a print shop. They want me to start training someone here who has no idea about any of what I do, what I went to school for 4 years for. I do not want to waste my time training someone only to tell them later that I'm not returning.

They need to get their ducks in a row, suck it up and really look for and hire someone qualified to take over my position. /rant

Yeah if you are not getting paid maternity leave then you better tell them so you dont have to train up a newbie

I am telling my boss later this summer, giving 4-6 weeks notice (depending on how I'm feeling), and just explaining that I simply can't manage the 11 hours away from home a day in light of my husband's travel schedule, and my salary does not cover all of the expenses related to going to work as day care is not an option for us with those hours. I'm sure she won't love it, but what is she going to do?

Im getting some paid maternity leave, so I will be resigning once my last check comes in (probably 2 months into the leave). I wont tell them beforehand. Good luck!

Is your health insurance through your company? Since your maternity leave is unpaid, I would give them a 14-30 day notice in writing prior to you departing to go on leave. Just tell them circumstances have changed and you're not planning on returning. I think a month notice is more than reasonable to find a replacement. I'm just worried if you tell them early, you'll find yourself out of a job sooner than you anticipated.

I don't know the details of your situation but be careful about telling too early. I had a friend lose her job while she was pregnant in a layoff since "she was going to leave anyway". It can happen, and it was legal.

That said, when it comes to telling just say you have decided that being a SAHM is what's best for your family so you won't be coming back after you have the baby, and you'll be happy to help with any transition. You don't have to justify your decision to them. Smile

This! But be prepared for them to let you go sooner than your actual resignation date. A lot of companies do that out of spite, but the good thing for you is you can collet unemployment.

Do you get paid disability through the state? In CA you get 6 weeks for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for c-section. However I'm not sure if you qualify for that if you are on unemployment so you may want to contact your local unemployment office to find out before you resign. I'm serious in saying they may just get rid of you or find your replacement now rather than letting you work until your resignation date.
