Anyone still battling a clogged tear duct?

I feel like I've tried everything! The warm compress massage, the drop of BM, waiting patiently, and his eye is still gunky!! I know the last resort is surgery when they get older but is there anyone out there still dealing with this? Is there some miracle remedy I haven't tried yet?

Re: Anyone still battling a clogged tear duct?

  • Mine's was really bad since birth, but in the last week or so has mostly cleared up unless he does a lot of crying. It's watery but not mucousy/"gunky".  I was told that most of the time it just resolves on it's own by age 1 or so.

  • DS's eye goop wasn't clearing up on its own with massage, warm compresses, etc. so the pedi gave us some prescription erythromycin (sp?) ointment.  That cleared it right up.  It's the same stuff they put in their eyes when they're born.

Hmmm...the pedi gave us a prescription for those drops too but said not to use it unless the goop turned green or bright yellow but it might be worth a shot. Thanks!

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  DS has clogged ducts until about 11 months and 3 weeks! Just before we were going to schedule the procedure, it magically cleared up!

It didn't bother him at all, so it wasn't a big deal.  I would just wait it out.  Your LO is still young.

My pediatrician said the same thing.  It really doesn't bother me.

  • DS had them pretty bad but they went away at 2 months when he had to go on amoxicillin for a slight ear infection.  Now I'm wondering if there was some sort of infection or it's just a coincidence!
